Job Description

Special Information:

  • If successful for this temporary work opportunity or assignment, permanent employees who choose to accept said assignment and are members of Local 416 will not retain their permanent status or permanent position and will become a temporary employee.
  • At the end of the temporary work opportunity/assignment, permanent employees will be laid off as a temporary employee and will be subject to the filling of temporary work opportunities/assignments and recall rights in the Local 416 Collective Agreement as a temporary employee.
  • Successful candidates are required to complete the full duration of the temporary work opportunity/assignment
  • Temporary employees who are members of Local 416, who have made a commitment to a seasonal/non-seasonal opportunity/assignment through the Work Selection process, are eligible to apply and be considered for an assessment only. Temporary employees who are deemed qualified through the assessment process with have their “Personal Work Selection List” (PSWL) updated for the period of time the assessment is valid
  • This temporary work opportunity or assignment may be subject to bumping in accordance with the “LETTER OF AGREEMENT for Temporary Work Opportunities/Assignments” under the TCEU Local 416 Memorandum of Settlement

Major Responsibilities:

  • Promotes responsible pet ownership through the delivery of animal services programs to the public, including field and shelter services
  • Carries out field inspections and investigations to ensure compliance with animal services programs and as they relate to municipal, provincial and federal legislation and advises the public on animal control legislation and by-laws
  • Responds to public inquiries, investigates complaints and requests for service with issues relating to animal services programs
  • Enforces legislation through commencement of proceedings under the Provincial Offences Act
  • Prepares reports and maintains records
  • Attends court and gives evidence on behalf of the City with respect to animal services matters
  • Provides humane and skilled capture, handling and restraint of wild and domestic animals, including sick and injured, both in the shelter and in the field/community
  • Transports animals to shelter or as directed to other locations
  • Provides daily care of animals in custody including, sanitary living conditions, feeding, watering, grooming, etc. and observing and reporting health and behaviour conditions. Administers animal health requirements, assists and/or performs euthanasia, and if required, assists in sterilization clinics
  • Provides services including animal intake, claims, searches, adoptions, registrations, etc., including handling of receipt transactions
  • Utilizes computer systems and other information and communication technologies related to animal services
  • Maintains animal service equipment and vehicle in a clean, sanitary and organized fashion
  • May be required to operate a pathological incinerator
  • Participates in the delivery of public education programs and animal services events, etc.
  • Performs other duties at this wage grade level or lower
  • Performs work in a safe, efficient and courteous manner

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

1. Successful completion of a recognized course in animal care at the community college level (e.g.: Animal Health Technician/Veterinary Technician) and significant technical experience working directly with animals or the approved equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Experience in the application of relevant policies, court procedures, regulations and legislation pertaining to animals (e.g. Municipal Code Chapter 349, Dog Owners’ Liability Act, etc.)

3. Experience in the use of a computerized records and data management system (similar to Chameleon) and standard PC applications (Word and Excel).

4. Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and must have or shall be required to obtain required City permit for assigned vehicle(s) and equipment.

You must also have:

  • Must be able to foster and maintain good public relations and customer service with the general public and be able to communicate effectively in a variety of situations in relation to the job duties.
  • Demonstrated skills in decision making/problem solving capacity.
  • Ability to prepare reports.
  • Must possess good oral and written skills.
  • May be required to do shift/overtime and weekend work in conformance with the Collective Agreement.
  • Required to be immunized against rabies and have a yearly titre to determine immunity level and if needed, receive booster vaccinations.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts (day, afternoon, night, weekend and holidays) and standby as required
  • Ability to lift objects (weighing up to 20 kgs)
