We currently have an opportunity to join the Laurier community as an Associate Director, Fundraising (Development): Athletics, Recreation and Wellness.
The Associate Director, Fundraising (Development): Athletics, Recreation and Wellness is accountable for all aspects of fundraising and donor relations within said units. As a collegial member of the overall Development Team, the Associate Director develops and implements fundraising and donor relations strategies which reflect the priorities and values of the Athletics and Recreation and Wellness portfolios within a broad plan established by University Development. Specifically, these strategies will include plans for prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. The incumbent will maintain a close rapport with the VP Student Affairs, the Director of Athletics and Recreation, the Associate Director of Athletics Operations, Coaches, Deans of Students and other key faculty and staff.
The incumbent will work closely with the VP Student Affairs and Director, Athletics and Recreation, and will draw on appropriate resources to pursue a highly targeted approach towards identifying, cultivating, soliciting and providing stewardship to prospects and donors so as to secure financial support. A key audience will be Laurier alumni with whom close relations will be maintained. The role is critical in sustaining productive relationships with new and existing donors recognizing the significant contribution made by individuals and corporations to the achievement of Laurier’s mission.
The Associate Director will develop annual performance goals with measurable outputs, including financial targets for new gifts and pledges in consultation with the Director of Development: Strategic Initiatives, the VP Student Affairs, and Director, Athletics and Recreation. The incumbent is also responsible for the coordination of development-oriented events of interest and value to prospects, donors and students, and serves as the Development team’s lead on planning and coordination of solicitation and stewardship for the Awards of Distinction program.
As a key member of the Development, Athletics and Recreation, and Student Affairs teams at Wilfrid Laurier University, the Associate Director participates in department-wide planning and initiatives which enhance fundraising.
Accountabilities :Major Gift Fundraising and Prospect Management
Manages an assigned list of 100-150 donors and prospects representing individuals, foundations, corporations and associations for the purpose of securing financial support;
Develops and implements strategies for identification, cultivation, and solicitation of prospects to achieve financial targets;
Coordinates prospect/donor calls, makes visits and conducts all necessary follow-up including correspondence to donors, contact reports, updates to Banner, and drafting of terms and conditions;
Serves as Development liaison with Student Affairs and Athletics and Recreation;
Develops, submits and follows up on funding proposals to prospective donors;
Develops and implements, in concert with the Donor Relations Officer, stewardship strategies for individual donors, including gift announcements, donor cultivation/recognition events, and reports to donors on progress and outcomes of fundraising projects they have supported with a view to strengthening those
Athletics, Recreation and Wellness Specific Fundraising Planning and Strategy Development
Plans and implements the portfolio’s involvement in the overall Development program; collaborates with department resources in fulfilling the plan;
Maintains a good working knowledge of the activities, priorities and needs in Athletics and Recreation and Wellness portfolios;
Reports bi-weekly to the Director, Development: Strategic Initiatives and Director, Athletics and Recreation, and at minimum on a monthly basis to the VP Student Affairs on all fundraising and donor relations initiatives;
Recommends specific actions to increase the effectiveness of development activities including own performance;
Meets bi-weekly with Associate Director, Business Operations (Athletics and Recreation) regarding coordination regarding sponsorship and fundraising initiatives;
Engages and assists the VP Student Affairs and individual faculty/staff members in fundraising and donor relations activities on behalf of the unit;
Develops and implements plans for fundraising activities which support the priorities of the units, including specific measureable goals for visits and solicitations;
Develops reports on fundraising progress;
Participates in Student Affairs meetings or other relevant bodies by reporting regularly on development activities;
Works collaboratively with Alumni Relations team to ensure prospect identification, relationship building and engagement occurs;
Maintains a high degree of sensitivity to the specific needs, values and culture of the Athletics and Wellness portfolio;
Collaborates with other Development and Alumni Relations staff to prepare and coordinate all communication pertaining to fundraising and donor relations within the units;
Prepares and edits relevant communications materials, such as project descriptions, case statements, funding proposals, and gift
Assists and advises the Director, Development: Strategic Initiatives, Director, Athletics and Recreation and others, as applicable, on specific fundraising initiatives and
Volunteer Management, Faculty Liaison and Administration
Identifies, recruits and manages volunteers to assist in fundraising activities as appropriate;
Provides direction and advice to student fundraising initiatives;
In consultation with other colleagues, ensures the effective and efficient use of centralized resources and information;
Contributes to the preparation and management of the annual budget for Development and Alumni Relations;
Assists in the management of the daily activities of the Development Assistants.
Five to seven years’ experience and proven track record of success in major gift fundraising, preferably in a post-secondary fundraising and donor relations function (or relevant experience);
A strong commitment to post-secondary education and continuous learning;
Sound knowledge of the vision and objectives of University Development, and the Student Affairs (specifically, Athletics and Recreation and Wellness) portfolios within the educational mission of the University;
An understanding of the university culture, of ethical fundraising practices and the various regulations and guidelines pertaining to fundraising;
Demonstrated success working collaboratively with senior leaders and volunteers
Proficiency in the use of data base management tools, contact management software, and office management software;
Strong planning and project management skills;
Results-oriented and creative
Sound analytical and decision-making skills;
Proven ability to think strategically and work independently in driving new initiatives or enhancing existing programs.
Relationship-building skills, good judgement and diplomacy;
Personable, outgoing, detail oriented
Collaborative, commitment to teamwork; able to play a key role in overall Development Team
Strong oral, written and presentation skills;
Capital Campaign Experience an asset;
Experience working within a university sport and recreation environment/culture is an asset.
Grade : MG-2B
Salary : $74,918 – $93,647
Salary Notes : This is a full-time, continuing position with an anticipated start date of September 16, 2019.
