We currently have an opportunity to join the Laurier community as a Co-ordinator ,Communications and Student Engagement.

The purpose of the Marketing and Events team is to connect with and inspire the Wilfrid Laurier Athletics and Recreation community through communications, creative content and event experiences with a focus on a deep understanding of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks brand and its traditions.

The Department of Athletics and Recreation is home to 22 varsity teams and 20 club teams, in addition to intramurals and recreation programming.

The Coordinator, Communications and Student Engagements, reports to the Associate Director, Business Operations, and will contribute to the departments overall goals for providing an exceptional community experience, while encouraging attendance/participation numbers during Wilfrid Laurier Athletics and Recreation events and successfully positioning/enhancing the Golden Hawks brand amongst the undergraduate and graduate-level student body. Successful execution of this role will result in increased support for the Golden Hawks Athletics and Recreation programming, improved overall attendance at events and increased school spirit.

The incumbent will be responsible for recreational student engagement, while supporting the department’s sport information requirements to the OUA (Provincial) and USport (National) league offices and media including stats, rosters, media guides and programs for select interuniversity sports. They will also assist with the promotion and awareness for the intramural, clubs and recreation programs and department special events.

This position will share responsibility for keeping the web page ‘live’ through coordinating material in order to maintain its presence within the university and community populations. The position will have shared responsibility for social media in addition to interactions with local media in regard to Golden Hawk Athletics and Recreation, as well as contributing to content creation and execution, and oversight of student staff.

They will be part of the marketing team and be responsible for developing the publications and advertising for the department. The incumbent will co-manage the work of the student communications assistants to assist with production of all projects.

Well-developed judgment and decision-making skills will be employed in ensuring that all print and web-based materials are produced well and are professional and accurate.

In addition, the incumbent will work with the Coordinator, Web and Technology in order to assist with updating the website, statistical software and ongoing tracking and archiving of data where applicable.

Actual hours of work have seasonal variations and there is frequent evening and weekend work. There are frequent interruptions, requiring flexibility and the ability to multitask. There is some requirement for travel based upon a variety of events related to student life and varsity travel.
Accountabilities : Athletic Services

  • Respond to routine sport information tasks from the league offices and other institutions.
  • Work as a contact for media in regard to Athletics.
  • Compose biographies and human interest stories for student athletes and coaches; Write profile and athletic pieces for the web, alumni newsletters and campus publications.
  • Assure the accurate and timely reporting of scores and the collection of complete game information (game sheets, statistical summaries, tournament results).
  • Write news releases and communications for both web and print publications and game inserts.
  • Assist with day-today varsity data requests including research, maintenance and reporting;
  • Coordinate, develop, and maintain relevant and engaging content, newsletters, social media accounts and continue development of the blog
  • Prepare and distributes media kits as required (media events, selected games and championships).
  • Maintain historical records and archives of interuniversity rosters and schedules.
  • Solicit and conduct interviews with athletes, coaches and alumni.
  • Stay abreast social media trends, while maintaining a constant presence on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and other mediums.
  • Ensures accurate archiving of athletics and recreations games, and statistical data for appropriate recall when needed.

Recreation Services

  • Work as a contact for media in regard to Recreation programming and services.
  • Compose biographies and human interest stories for student-athletes, club and intramural teams, and recreation events; write recreational pieces for the web and other campus publications.
  • Coordinate, develop and maintain relevant and engaging content, newsletters, social media accounts and continued development of the blog
  • Solicit and conduct interviews with recreation personnel, including student-athletes, staff and community members
  • Stay abreast social media trends, while maintaining a constant presence on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and other mediums.
  • Work with recreation staff to coordinate stories and live coverage for recreation events.
  • Maintain relationships with club and intramural teams.
  • Collaborate with Laurier Brantford campus staff on aligned projects.
  • Ensure accurate archiving of recreation events, including club roster management.


  • Oversee the production of game line up sheets for all revenue generating sports and other program events as required (including playoffs and special events);
  • Assist in the development and execution of department major events including Hall of Fame, Athletic Banquet and fundraising events.
  • Create and execute a marketing strategy to increase participation in the program on an annual basis


  • Responsible for development and production of Athletic and Recreation digital/print materials including; Alumni newsletters, Football program, Athletic Calendar.
  • Create and coordinate with Associate Director, Business Operations on regular marketing materials.
  • Co-develop social media calendar and planning in line with the department’s annual marketing plan.
  • Edit copy produced by other staff or freelancers, proofread editorial copy, and review page proofs; maintain and update all department social media outlets
  • Serve as project leader on certain publications, including guiding all stages of development of these projects and working with members of the production team – such as freelance writers, student writers, webcasting, and alumni communications on implementation


  • Work with the Associate Director, Business Operations to develop a work schedule to address service and development priorities;
  • Be a team member in Athletics and Recreation marketing unit issues management and annual student engagement planning by providing research and writing support
  • Provide expertise and support in special communication initiatives such as press conferences and major announcements.
  • Assist with hiring and directional duties for Communication student staff;
  • Assist with training and duties for student Event staff operating statistical terminals, navigating the back end of the website and writing and social media training.

Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years of job-related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in Sports Management, Recreation Administration or related field preferred.
  • Knowledge and experience with Google Analytics, Twitter, Facebook Insights, HTML, Final Cut, InDesign, Photoshop, Meltwater (or equivalent).
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills with ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and advance strategic plans and programs that support the Department of Athletic and Recreation’s mission, vision, values.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with multiple stakeholders in a positive and productive manner while maintaining integrity and adhering to the policies/regulations of Wilfrid Laurier University’s Department of Athletic and Recreation.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and effectively determine when information needs to be advanced to other decision makers.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, ever-changing environment, with the ability to effectively adapt and be flexible.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a positive, team-oriented environment.
