We currently have an opportunity to join the Laurier community as a Communications Officer (Alumni Engagement).
As a key member of the communications team within Development and Alumni Relations (DAR), the Communications Officer (Alumni) is responsible for all communications and marketing targeted to alumni. The candidate will write and edit stories, marketing materials and select internal documents, contribute to our social media channels, as well as assist with the communication needs of the Wilfrid Laurier University Alumni Association (WLUAA).

Reporting to the Manager of Communications: Development and Alumni Relations (DAR), with a dotted line report to Associate Director, Alumni Relations and working in close consultation with colleagues throughout DAR and Communications, Public Affairs and Marketing (CPAM), the incumbent plays a pivotal role in advancing the university’s mission and vision by developing and coordinating both targeted and broad-based communications to alumni. We want to inspire our grads to stay in touch, come back to visit and to support the university that helped launch their careers.

The Communications Officer (Alumni) is responsible for meeting objectives established in consultation with the Manager, Communications: Developement and AR, AVP, Alumni and Donor Engagement, and the senior management team of DAR. The regular hours of work for this position are Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm.

Accountabilities :
    • In consultation with the Manager, Communications: DAR, creates, implements, and manages all strategic communications and marketing initiatives to engage alumni, including but not limited to: homecoming, reunions, all event communications, e-communications, faculty-segmented enewsletters, student and young alumni programming and outreach activity, and chapter event promotions and communications.
    • In consultation with the Manager and digital engagement officer, provides strategic direction for the Alumni website. Writes, creates and posts content to the website and Alumni social media channels.
    • Utilizes iModules and working coding knowledge to develop email templates for alumni communications, including electronic newsletters, event communications, contests, and surveys.
    • Is a staff representative and active participant on the WLUAA Communications Outreach Committee. Works closely with this group to ensure the university’s needs and objectives are being met and to also ensure the needs and objectives of WLUAA are well represented and reflected across campus, where relevant.
    • Serves as an active and engaged member of the Campus Magazine Advisory Committee and provides strategic input and advice to this committee regarding the university’s magazine for alumni and friends – LAURIER Campus.
    • Writes stories and communications and marketing material for DAR web and print publications, and social media.
    • Ensures adherence to comprehensive institutional visual identity standards for all Alumni Relations communications and marketing pieces based on guidelines and standards provided by CPAM.
    • Develops key messages for Alumni Relations target audiences and ensures consistent integration of these through all alumni and development communications.
    • As appropriate for the completion of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving materials, solicits and conducts interviews with the full range of people associated with the university, including the chancellor, president, board of governors, donors, faculty, staff, students and alumni,
    • Attends university events as required to gather information that is pertinent for the Alumni Relations target audiences (e.g. guest lectures, alumni relations events, meetings of Senate and Board of Governors, etc.).
    • Works with Alumni Relations team and external affinity partners to coordinate the promotion of affinity partner-specific communications, benefits and value adds.
    • Liaises with communication colleagues across campus, as required.
    • Uses Cognos and iModules to generate contact lists for communications pieces.
    • Maintains a communications schedule for Alumni Relations, makes recommendations regarding scheduling, improving process and oversees email/event promotion outreach best practices and templates.


Qualifications :
    • Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or a related discipline with a minimum of four (4) years of recent related work experience in communications, print journalism, and/or publications development.
    • Superior written and verbal communication skills, including proficiency in news, web, social media, and marketing writing.
    • Excellent proofreading skills.
    • Sound news judgment and excellent interviewing skills.
    • Experience writing, creating and posting online content to websites and social media channels.
    • Demonstrated success in execution of strategic communications initiatives.
    • Ability to successfully deal with multiple demands and priorities, and often competing deadlines.
    • Superior interpersonal skills and proven ability to work in a collaborative environment.
    • Strong problem-solving and prioritizing skills in a multi-task environment.
    • Appreciation of diverse perspectives and ability to work with diverse groups including affinity partners, administration, faculty, staff and students.
    • High level of knowledge regarding social media, the web, video production, and photography.
    • Strong working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator.
    • Experience in photography and video shooting and editing.
    • Experience working with imodules considered an asset.

Salary : $34.17 – $40.22
Salary Notes : This is a full-time, limited term position until September 22, 2021. The anticipated start date for this position is October 7, 2019.
