Position Description

The Institute for Mental Health Policy Research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health is seeking a Field Coordinator for a part-time, contract position in Walpole Island First Nation, Ontario. The Field Coordinator will support a research project funded by a Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) Health System Research Fund entitled A Regional Knowledge Mobilization for First Nations Mental Wellness Strategies. This project involves the collection of local data and the development of community wellness strategies in five Ontario First Nations. This position is specific to Walpole Island First Nation, where the Field Coordinator will assist with coordinating data collection under the supervision of the Project Scientist and with direction and support from the Project Coordinator.

The Field Coordinator will be responsible for assisting in implementing and overseeing numerous aspects of the research project, including coordinating and attending meetings of the Community Advisory Circle for the project; recruiting study participants; organizing and carrying out field work and data collection activities, including an online survey questionnaire and one-on-one interviews; obtaining informed consent from study participants; compiling and organizing large volumes of data; ensuring quality control associated with collection and storage of data in the mobile lab; monitoring adherence to safety protocols associated with the mobile lab; orienting and overseeing the work of research assistants; arranging on-site training and meetings; and any other duties associated with the research, as required. Adherence to strict protocols for the protection of data privacy and confidentiality is required. As a member of the research team, the Field Coordinator will join and support a healthy workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable regulatory and legislative requirements.

This part-time position will have varying hours. This position will be based in Walpole Island First Nation with initial orientation and training in Toronto and London. Occasional meetings will take place in London throughout the project.


The successful candidate will have a Masters in health or social sciences or a related discipline. An equivalent combination of education and work experience will be considered. Knowledge related to mental health, substance use, addictions, violence or trauma is considered an asset as well as experience interacting with individuals in a research, academic, and/or service agency setting. The successful candidate will have demonstrated research and project coordination experience, knowledge of research design and methods, and experience with data collection techniques and ability to manage data. Candidates must possess strong organizational skills and be extremely detail-oriented. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working with people who have substance dependence and/or mental health issues. Candidates must be proficient in using Microsoft Office programs and must be conscientious, reliable, mature, enthusiastic, and motivated. This position requires the ability to work both independently and collaboratively while closely following detailed instructions. Candidates require the ability to work effectively in a wide range of settings with individuals from diverse backgrounds. You will be required to attend a two and one-half day CAMH orientation session in Toronto. Reliable transportation is required throughout the term of the contract. Preference will be given to candidates who are members or residents of Walpole Island First Nation. Candidates require the ability to work effectively in a variety of settings with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Please Note: This part-time, contract position lasting to December 31, 2019, is NOT part of any bargaining unit.
