Develop and sustain standalone and integrated computer based information solutions, products, applications and web interfaces to support System Operating and other Hydro One internal stakeholders. Maintain and be responsible for the planning, design, development and testing of the applications/interfaces and the creation of supporting documentation. Recommend and suggest for approval appropriate policies and processes relating to the content and design of information for the applications.

Job Description

  • Develop integrated and/or standalone computer based information solutions, products, applications, web interfaces as identified by the Lead Developer or Grid Operations Manager to support System Operations and other internal stakeholders, as required.
  • Assist the Grid Operations Manager of Performance & Business Reporting (PBR) and work with other departments within System Operations / Operating Technology (OT) and Information Solutions Division (ISD) to ensure that established Corporate Internet/Intranet, information technology standards, policies and procedures within the terms of Corporate security and privacy are observed and maintained.
  • Assist in identifying opportunities for information solutions that will provide benefits for user groups and address a total solution in terms of data sources, software tools, integration with existing functions/applications, user interfaces, algorithms, etc.
  • Assist in the gathering and analysis of client/user requirements, formation of functional specifications and development of information solutions/applications through all phases of design, build, test, document and implement.
  • Gather detailed requirements from users/stakeholders.
  • Create functional requirements documents(s) based on user requirements.
  • Develop technical roadmap based on stakeholder requirements and sustainment model.
  • Develop application with appropriate language(s)/application(s).
  • Design database models and work with internal stakeholders (inc. OT) to create appropriate environments.
  • Test (including producing test scripts, if deemed necessary) for stability and reliability based on user requirements.
  • Monitor application for operational stability.
  • Consult with internal stakeholders to determine user acceptance and/or collect user suggestions for enhancements.
  • Report on use, performance and user satisfaction based on data collection from various sources including logs, user correspondence, etc.
  • Develop and write developers documentation for application/information technology solution.
  • Develop and write user and training documentation.
  • Provide desk-side assistance during and after application/information technology solution implementation or as required by user(s) group.17
  • Act as SME (Subject Matter Expert) for assigned applications by providing information to external application vendors, as necessary.
  • Perform ongoing technical and content maintenance of the applications and intranet/SharePoint sites. Respond to verbal and written inquiries including monitoring a centralized mailbox for information and/or requests from employees and other Departments.
  • Plan, write, analyze and coordinate the production of materials and statistical reports including reliability and user activity in support of Department/Division#s established records and data collection, and code repository procedures ensuring compliance with Corporate requirements.
  • Maintain awareness of advanced and/or emerging technology developments related to information systems technology, database and web design and other relevant computer applications by identifying opportunities that will provide overall benefit to the Line of Business and user population. Assist in evaluation and enhancements of new products/services.
  • Contribute to the identification of potential improvement to existing systems and identify new information system requirements.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Selection Criteria


  • Requires a knowledge of computer science and programming languages to develop and design custom applications, websites and perform system analysis and data modelling on information and reporting systems.
  • Requires a knowledge of computer technology to analyze trends and develop applications, web designs and produce reports for performance and customer/employee satisfaction.
  • Requires a knowledge of the power system to assist in developing applications supporting the business operations.
  • Requires a good knowledge of English (both orally and in writing) to work effectively with users and prepare technical reports and user/training/developer documentation. This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired through the successful completion of a four (4) year university education in the appropriate discipline, or by having the equivalent level of education.


  • Requires experience in the use of various software tools, software systems, programming languages and methods as it relates to software development and sustainment.
  • Requires experience with web-based development languages and architecture.
  • Requires experience with code repository principles and software.
  • Requires an understanding of object oriented programming principles.
  • Requires experience with database development and maintenance.
  • Requires experience with the practical aspects of technical writing and editing for the content of web applications and other technical and user documentation.
  • Requires experience with the communications processes, administration and impact of the procedures affecting the Company.
  • Requires experience to be familiar with the organization, contacts and interrelationships of units and with other internal and external units and to utilize internal and external resources to develop effective applications, web sites and communication materials. A period of over 4 years and up to and including 6 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
