Housing Support Worker

Atlohsa Family Healing Services is seeking a motivated and dynamic individual to fill the role of Housing Support Worker. The primary role of the Housing Support Worker is to establish and maintain relationships with participants of Atlohsa’s supportive housing program through the delivery of intensive, in-home housing supports. Using a Healing and Housing First approach in alignment with the Giwetashkad Indigenous Homelessness Plan (forthcoming 2020) the Housing Support Worker will provide participant-led, strengths-based healing and housing supports to individuals and families who have experienced homelessness and/or housing insecurity and/or been exposed to violence/abuse. The worker may also provide housing supports to individuals and families in the community currently staying in emergency housing programs or shelters, affordable housing developments or social housing communities, or who have been diverted from emergency housing but require additional supports to obtain and retain safe, affordable and permanent housing.

Role and Responsibility

Using a Holistic Indigenous-led approach to principles of Housing First, the successful applicant will offer a range of personalized and outcome-focused supports to participants to achieve stability in their home, family and community, including access to housing, organizing daily meaningful activities (education, volunteering, budgeting and other life skill needs) in one-on-one or group settings and connecting participants with other services such as health care. The Housing Support Worker must have excellent administrative skills, record accurate and detailed case notes and must be able to provide clear, concise objective communication regarding participants. The Housing Support Worker will advocate for participants, liaison with other social service agencies and provide community outreach. The Housing Support Worker must have excellent communication skills and the ability to plan and facilitate programs and circles to promote holistic healing values and principles. The Housing Support Worker will also have the ability to coordinate and lead the Atlohsa Housing Committee and to develop current policies and procedures for the supportive housing program to ensure participant safety and housing maintenance compliance.

Suitability

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the languages, traditional ways, history and cultures of the Indigenous population in the London region
  • Understanding of Indigenous Homelessness
  • Current knowledge of Indigenous community services and resources
  • College or university education in social services is an asset
  • Experience with working with individuals who are experiencing homelessness and working with women and children who have been exposed to violence/abuse
  • Demonstrated ability to receive training support, supervision and direction
  • Demonstrated strengths in interpersonal relations, problem -solving, crisis intervention, group dynamics, community development and other innovative approaches
  • Cultural competency and an awareness of its impact on practice
  • Skills in conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation (to build trust and resolve disagreements)
  • Excellent organizational and coordination skills and the ability to prioritize multiple competing workload demands in fast paced environment
  • Effective communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with others in a respectful manner as defined in the Atlohsa Code of Conduct
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License, First Aid and CPR certificate and Current Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Female applicants of Indigenous Ancestry preferred.

EMPLOYEMENT TERM: Permanent Full-Time

START DATE: February 3, 2020

CLOSING DATE: January 24, 2020 at 5 pm

REMUNERATION: $21.95/hour, 40 hours per week
