General Accountabilities:

  • Manage Design and Technology team and the Hydro One Records Management team, ensure that Consolidated Bill of Material, E-BOM, 3D, terrestrial laser scanning and Enterprise Data Management systems and technologies are up and running for use by Transmission Engineering, Project Delivery, Environmental Engineering, Stations and Construction.
  • Ensure that records are processed as per users’ requests.
  • Work with other LOBs including ISD, Corporate Security, Planning and Transmission and Stations to provide new technologies to further work on the capital work program.

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Manage the work of staff associated with Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) systems support and associated projects.
  • Organize, plan, schedule, direct and monitor the progress and performance of staff.
  • Prepare cost and technical evaluations and manpower estimates and initiate recommendations on hiring, firing, transfer and promotion of staff.
  • Act as Engineering#s single point of contact for all labour relations issues including, job challenges, grievances, postings, GRB ,arbitration, etc.
  • Create responses and prepare material for Grievance Review Boards and Arbitration cases.
  • Develop, recommend and initiate processes to enhance the quality of staff within the department while minimizing grievances and challenges.
  • Enhance the relationships between Management, Power Workers Union and the Society of Energy Professionals.
  • Work closely with Human resources and Labour relations as required.
  • Manage the work of staff engaged in drawing production services such as the preparation, design, development, recording and production of complex detailed drawings for use in work management and scheduling, desktop publishing, bills of materials for construction, fabrication, procurement, installation, illustrations for record purposes.
  • Manage the performance of structural, electrical, mechanical and architectural construction features for intended and existing facilities in the Distribution Electrical System (DES), including: electrical substations; regulating stations; switching stations;metering equipment; overhead and underground lines; service and office buildings.
  • Manage the work of staff engaged in production of drawings, graphic layouts, pages for manuals and documents and similar work for DES Standards, Transmission Operations and various other clients, both internal and external to the Company.
  • Plan, organize, schedule, coordinate work and assign tasks to conform to schedules and provide instruction, as required.
  • Conduct performance appraisal interviews.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the section’s work and recommend changes to performance.
  • Interview and select candidates for staff positions.
  • Develop and recommend the CAD drafting strategy to be applied to Engineering and Construction services to management staff.
  • Implement the approved CAD environment strategy, through executing a resource plan, staff capability assessment  and skills, development plan, upgrades, new technology acquisitions (software & hardware), configurations and production aids, to increase the Business Unit#s competitive advantage.
  • Manage the production environment functions in support of the business (system availability, system performance, file maintenance system backup, etc.)
  • Coordinate and provide technical services related to the design, development and acquisition of computerized drafting and publishing,information systems to distribution staff. Influence staff to adopt a course of action to one suitable to the Company on drafting strategies that would be beneficial to the Company.
  • Work with outside organizations requiring drafting and graphic services and resolve issues that may become controversial related to the operation and maintenance of services provided by the Company.
  • Keep a breast of developments in the field of information systems, CAD systems, associated computer systems, etc.
  • Provide ways and means to improve efficiency and economics of systems.
  • Review technical publications and other literature.
  • Communicate with counterparts in similar fields, to exchange views and discuss the merits of improved design and technology.
  • Prepare and monitor short and long term budgets.
  • Ensure CAD drafting capability is evaluated through various measurable means (capability assessment, quality control, etc). Recommend changes to improve effectiveness.
  • Manage and develop the CAD training and development programs.
  • Assist in the development of new concepts, working culture (people acceptance), philosophy, operating and maintenance of standards and engineering policy in the dynamically changing field of computer aided engineering.

Essential Knowledge:

Selection Criteria:

  • Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario will be an asset. (Those who are not licensed engineers will also be considered).
  • Knowledge normally acquired either in a four year electrical engineering/engineering sciences university program or the equivalent practical experience.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in aspects of design, process, standards, compliance, construction, commissioning, operation & maintenance related to engineering and facilities in Hydro One.
  • Good knowledge of the Hydro One operational requirements.
  • Good knowledge of business fundamentals and economics.
  • Knowledge of project management principles, tendering and contract administration will be an asset.
  • Experience in providing consulting services to external customers will be an asset.
  • Experience in management and supervision of engineering and other professional staff will be an asset.
  • A period of over 10 years and up to and including 12 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
