General Accountabilities:

  • Support the VP, Distribution in maintaining financial integrity, compliance and effective financial reporting.
  • Identify requirements for the multi-skilled workforce in lines & forestry, determine resource requirements within Operations.
  • Specific Accountabilities:
  • Supervise and oversee the operational accounting, monthly close and reporting processes for transmission and distribution, including the timely and accurate issuance of appropriate management reports.
  • This includes actual to budget and year-over-year variance analysis for current period and year-to-date and the monthly coordination and preparation of forecasts.
  • Review results and significant issues with the Director, Distribution Work Management on a proactive basis and provide recommendations for resolution ensuring the Company’s objectives are achieved.
  • Coordinate the preparation of briefing notes and summaries for Director, Distribution Work Management as required.
  • Ensure all known issues are accounted for appropriately, including forecasting, standard rates, and industry or Government pronouncements and regulations.
  • Provide an oversight role for the operations budgets
  • Ensure all financial, compliance, internal control and productivity objectives are achieved.
  • Monitor research and communicate developments on operation and reporting work program issues, including regulatory developments.
  • Ensure impacts to the current results, budget and strategies are proactively developed and reviewed with senior management.
  • Monitor and provide an oversight role for the monthly Operations review process, accounts receivable, customer billing, and revenue processes.
  • Provide a leadership role for the provision of financial support to all Line of Business areas, including reporting, ad-hoc requests, and confidential business planning/budgeting.
  • Ensure results and recommendations are effectively communicated to senior management.
  • Evaluate and implement strategies for streamlining and improving the timeliness, accuracy and transparency of the Line of Business reporting processes.
  • Support regulatory requirements, including witnessing, preparation of evidence, development of briefing material, responses to interrogatories and transcript undertakings and general hearing support.
  • Ensure applicable outsourced services are appropriately delivered and effectively manage the relationship with service provider as it pertains to the Line of Business management and support units.
  • Ensure services provided under the statements of work are fully carried out; negotiate new services as required.
  • Take a leadership role in managing the various external and internal audit and control processes.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Define resourcing requirements and the mix of resources keeping in mind the labour agreements
  • Manage the non-energy accounts receivables for lines and forestry.

Managerial Accountabilities:

  • Supervise all direct report staff and make effective recommendations to Director, Distribution Work Management on pay, performance evaluations and disciplinary matters.
  • Plan, organize, schedule and assign the work and check work assignments, providing instruction, advice and guidance as required.
  • Ensure subordinates are able and willing to produce the desired output, and that subordinate managers continually improve the processes for achieving the outputs.
  • Assess staff capability to do the required work, now and in the future.
  • Conduct personal effectiveness reviews of subordinate’s managers/specialists to build relationships and trust, and to improve effectiveness.
  • Mentor and counsel subordinates-once-removed.
  • Provide leadership to staff in performing their confidential financial responsibilities to Senior Executives.
  • Translate the Hydro One and Distribution goals and objectives into a direction which guides the operation of the business, and communicate that direction to all staff.
  • Communicate expectations regarding the collateral relationship among subordinate managers and specialists.
  • Provide subordinates with appropriate knowledge, skills, information, work procedures and equipment to facilitate responsible behavior which will protect their safety and contribute to their health.
  • Provide a work environment and facilities where health and safety incidents are minimized and employees contribute without the fear of reprisals.
  • Ensure safety and related training is maintained
  • Provide a work environment that supports and values diversity, and is free from harassment.
  • Ensure every reasonable precaution is taken for the protection of subordinates, the environment and the assets.
  • Provide for security of human and physical resources including information
  • Accountability for the Outputs of Others:
  • Set the appropriate context for subordinates (i.e. corporate strategies and policies, accountabilities, tasks, budget and Programs, compliance and performance targets, expectations for continuous improvement, etc.).
  • Set an effective framework of policies and procedures for the work of the unit.
  • Know and ensure own and subordinates’ compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, and all corporate policies and procedures, and generally accepted practices relating to the work of the unit.
  • Establish a two-way working relationship with subordinates to solicit their views on conditions and potential changes effecting their work, and continuous improvement opportunities.

Selection Criteria

Essential Knowledge:

  • Requires an in-depth knowledge of finance, management accounting, reporting and analysis
  • Requires a good knowledge of English to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts and to prepare technical reports.
  • This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of a four year university education in business administration or commerce with an accounting or finance major and a recognized accounting designation (CPA, CGA, CMA, CA) or by having the equivalent level of education.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles, economics and mathematics to develop costing techniques, accounting and financial policies and regulatory policies is considered an asset.
  • Assumes safety, quality and financial accountability for work performed and results.
  • Demonstrates commitment to continuous improvement principles and joint problem solving with employees and employee representatives.
  • Deals with and resolves issues in a timely and consistent manner.
  • Deals appropriately with poor performance and reinforces good performance.

Essential Experience:

  • Requires financial experience to prepare and develop financial reporting & analysis, accounting practices and procedures.
  • Requires experience to be familiar with various management systems (SAP), controls, policies, procedures, data and business processes and agreements governing Company’s activities.
  • A period of over 10 years and up to and including 12 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, Outlook, etc.), with advanced knowledge of Excel considered an asset.
