We currently have an opportunity to join the Laurier community as a Manager, Cultural Programming and Community Engagement.
Reporting to the University Librarian, the Manager: Cultural Programming and Community Engagement is responsible for strategic planning and oversight of the Library’s cultural programming and events, public relations and manages key community development initiatives from inception to successful completion.

This role will be responsible for working closely with Development and Alumni Relations to develop and implement fundraising and donor relations strategies in support of strategic priorities of the Library.

The incumbent will design, develop and implement a broad range of cultural, literary, and arts/performance based programs that support the holistic development of Laurier students, as well as special events, including the Library’s Culture Series. The Manager will be also be responsible for developing special programming that would be aimed at generating revenue to ensure sustainability. The job involves working in close collaboration with multiple stakeholders both internally within the Library’s expanded organizational structure, which now includes WLU Press and the Robert Langen Art Gallery, and externally, including CPAM, program partners and sponsors, media, other cultural institutions, regional organizations and municipalities.

This position has a university-wide mandate and is based at the Waterloo Campus.  The incumbent provides leadership in a multi-campus environment, requiring regular interaction, communication and collaboration with staff and stakeholders at the Waterloo Campus, Brantford Campus and Toronto office and external partners. They are responsible for the effective management of allocated financial resources and human resources. The Manager will ensure the unit’s policies, programs and services are delivered equitably across all campuses and reflect the needs of local stakeholders.

Accountabilities : Cultural Programming

    • Working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, designs, develops and oversees the implementation of a wide range of cultural programming and special events in a multi-campus University environment.
    • Develops and recommends to the University Librarian and the Library Executive budget for cultural programming and events, as well as strategies for the development of business models and plans for revenue generation.
    • Establishes and cultivates partnerships internally and externally to enhance and deliver quality programming for the Library.
    • Plans, implements and evaluates programs to ensure that they are cost effective and support the Library’s and the University’s strategic agenda.
    • Develops goals, objectives and action plans for the area of responsibility and monitors operations in relation to these goals.
    • Prepares and executes media and marketing plans to promote and raise awareness of library services, resources, events and cultural programs. Promotes Library, Gallery and Press contributions, ROI, and successes to senior decision makers and other stakeholders.
    • Coordinates the efforts with a diverse range of team members and stakeholders within the overall Library structure (Library, WLU Press and Robert Langen Gallery) and university departments such as CPAM, Development and Alumni Relations and others.
    • In collaboration with CPAM, establishes and maintains effective relations with marketing, advertising and design partners and agencies as appropriate.
    • Represents the library in community and professional organizations as appropriate; promotes library services, partnerships and supports Library’s fund-raising initiatives from a communication and marketing perspective.
    • Responsible for the effective management of allocated financial resources.

Community Engagement

    • Under direction of the University Librarian and Library Executive, develops, implements and evaluates comprehensive annual community engagement and development strategies aimed at promoting key messages about the library. Identifies new opportunities to advance Laurier Library’s initiatives, through joint partnerships, new funding sources, and in-kind donations, and brings those opportunities to the table.
    • In concert with Library Executive and in consultation with Development and Alumni Relations establishes annual fundraising/revenue generation goals and is responsible for meeting targets. Initiates and establishes relationships within the community, including cultural organizations, corporations, community organizations, regional municipalities, post-secondary education institutions, foundations and government funding bodies
    • Oversees, investigates and develops opportunities for grant funding and writes and presents grant proposals.
    • Oversees the planning and coordination of special events that support development and community engagement initiatives
    • Develops and maintains positive relationships with local, provincial, national, and international partners in support of the Library engagement strategy.
    • Engages with the non-profit sector to support Laurier’s efforts with providing education and experiences with social innovation projects.
    • Engages with indigenous communities and leaders in support of Laurier’s efforts to indigenize the university and to respond to the calls to action outlined by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
    • Maintains regular communication with partners to update them on leading events, research, opportunities, and changes to the Laurier Library.
    • Prepares and delivers a monthly status report for the University Librarian and Library Executive team.
Qualifications :
    • University degree with specialization in Communications, English, Journalism, Marketing or related area is required. Masters degree preferred.
    • Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) is preferred.
    • At least (5) years of demonstrated experience developing and implementing successful Programming strategies. Preference will be given to direct library, literary/publishing and/or cultural industry, with related strategic marketing and communications experience.
    • At least (5) years of proven work-related experience in prospect development, management and stewardship programming.
    • Ability to establish effective working relationships and collaborative work strategies with internal and external contacts and stakeholders is critical. Strong ability to build and lead diverse cross-functional teams to realize concrete goals and proven track record for being proactive in delivering results on strategic initiatives.
    • Thorough knowledge and understanding of fundraising principles including sponsorships, donor recognition and planned giving.
    • Ability to research and analyze subject matter, identify issues and trends and generate summaries and recommendations.
    • Ability to set goals, establish priorities, think creatively, implement new ideas and manage change.
    • Project management skills including strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    • Proven experience in preparing grant applications and record of successful grant proposals.
    • Proven creativity and ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with both internal and external stakeholders including the community and media. Demonstrated ability to manage traditional and new media. Ability to make presentations to large groups and to speak publicly through various forms of media.
    • Proven ability to function well in high stress situations with tact and discretion and ability to manage multiple complex portfolios of projects. .
    • Superior facilitation and interpersonal skills.
    • Demonstrated strong judgment and decision making skills.
    • Familiarity with the University’s and Library’s strategic vision and organizational structure is an asset.
    • Broad knowledge of literary, cultural and current affairs, with well-established industry connections is an asset.
    • Experience in public sector and unionized environment is an asset.
    • Experience in working with community-based boards is an asset.
Grade : MG-2B
Salary : $74,918 – $84,282
