Manager of Environmental and H&S Compliance

This pivotal role with the City of Toronto’s Solid Waste Management Services Division would be a welcome opportunity for a best practices leader in Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S) Compliance who’s looking to take the next step in a successful career as a manager of people, resources and change in a multi-stakeholder environment. As Manager of Environmental and H&S Compliance, you’ll provide senior-level strategic advice and support to the Solid Waste Management Services senior management team on the overall approach to environmental and health and safety compliance. With a focus on supporting an organization-wide culture of safety, you’ll lead and manage the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the Division’s Occupational Health & Safety Program, Business Continuity Plan, Emergency Plan, fire and life safety system reviews, and Environmental Compliance reporting, including training, auditing and reporting requirements.

Leading by example as you supervise the day-to-day activities of all assigned staff, you’ll develop and administer the Unit’s annual budget, control expenditures, and manage, motivate and train a diverse workforce, ensuring effective teamwork, and high standards of work quality and organizational performance, resolving labour relations issues, and promoting continuous learning and innovation.

Your strengths in project management, analytics, report writing, presentation delivery and research will be evident as you lead the planning, design and execution of internal or external projects related to Occupational Health & Safety, emergency and business continuity planning, and environmental compliance, and conduct research in these areas. In so doing, you’ll take into consideration recent advances in the field, corporate policies and practices, legislation and initiatives by other divisions and levels of government.

Among the other strengths you bring to the role of Manager, Environmental and H&S Compliance will be the following key qualifications:

  1. Postsecondary education in Environmental and/or Health & Safety Compliance (e.g. Environmental Control Systems, and Health & Safety) or an equivalent combination of education and considerable experience applying these concepts in practice and program development.
  2. Considerable experience applying fundamental knowledge of leading-edge internal audit and risk management theories and methodologies, supported by considerable experience managing in an internal audit environmental, with service delivery and project management accountabilities, as well as dealing with due diligence principles, and health and safety standards and/or quality management systems, such as ISO 9000 Quality Management Systems, ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, OHSAS 18000 Health & Safety and HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), in government or related agencies.
  3. Considerable experience in the preparation of budgets and control of expenditures.

You’re an excellent strategic thinker with strong planning and process flow skills, a working knowledge of all relevant legislation, and municipal programs and services, and considerable experience in stakeholder communications and relationship management related to Environmental and H&S Compliance, enabling you to interpret and influence current and future compliance requirements that impact the Division.

A persuasive, savvy communicator and capable negotiator, with highly developed conflict resolution and public relations skills, you know how to interact with all levels of the organization, forge solid internal and external relationships, and function effectively in a service-oriented, politically sensitive environment, while balancing the needs of the organization with those of customers against valuable resources. Knowledge of issues relevant to the solid waste services business would be a valued asset.

Salary Range: $110,965.40 – $130,366.60 per year
