We currently have an opportunity to join the Laurier community as a Marketing and Communications Officer.

The Marketing and Communications Officer will be a key contributor to the university’s Communications, Public Affairs and Marketing (CPAM) department. Reporting to the Associate Director: Marketing and Creative Services with accountability to the  Associate Director: Communications and Public Affairs, the Marketing and Communications Officer will be involved in a variety of communications, marketing, research, media relations and awareness tasks and initiatives. The key focus of the position will be the coordination and creation of content for regular marketing and recruitment materials as well as special or one-time marketing and reputation materials. The incumbent will also be involved in researching, writing and editing a variety of communications pieces, including news releases, articles and stories for the university’s alumni magazine, university core web properties as well as assisting with news inquiries. The position deals extensively with groups and individuals both internal and external to the university.

The regular hours of work for this position are Monday to Friday 8:30am – 4:30pm.

Accountabilities :

 

  • Coordinates and creates content for recruitment/marketing publications for undergraduate and graduate students. Includes keeping an up-to-date master list of all publications produced annually; working closely with the Office of Recruitment and Admissions and various faculties, departments and individuals in updating content; working with the Associate Director: Marketing and Creative Services and the CPAM design team throughout the design and production phases; ensuring all deadlines are met; ensuring messaging is consistent with overall university messaging, etc.
  • Proofreads and edits materials created in Creative Services to ensure consistent messaging.
  • Coordinates and creates content for marketing and reputation publications (e.g. Annual Report) and, as required, special, one-time projects.
  • Maintains detailed planning records for publications.
  • Writes news releases, news and feature stories, campus updates, and communications and marketing materials for web and print publications.
  • Updating and maintaining CPAM’s intranet (Connect) content
  • Assists with media relations tasks.
  • Solicits and conducts interviews with the full range of people associated with the university, including the chancellor, president, chair of the board of governors, donors, faculty, staff, students and alumni.
  • Proposes story ideas for internal and external publications
  • Identifies events and initiatives being worked on in Marketing and Creative Services that are newsworthy, and ensures information is passed to Communications and Public Affairs.

Qualifications :

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field.
  • Minimum five year’s work experience in communications, publications development, and/or journalism.
  • Work experience in media relations, including the ability to deal with reporters working under tight deadlines.
  • Experience organizing and executing special communications initiatives.
  • Proven project management ability and demonstrated ability to consistently meet challenging project deadlines.
  • Proven ability to deal with multiple demands and priorities, and often competing deadlines.
  • Proven ability to work under tight time pressures while meeting the needs of a variety of stakeholders.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, including work experience writing news, web and marketing content.
  • Superior proofreading skills demonstrated through past work experience.
  • Excellent news judgment and interviewing skills.
  • Superior interpersonal skills and proven ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and prioritizing skills in a multi-task environment.
  • Appreciation of diverse perspectives and ability to work with diverse groups including members of the media, administration, faculty, staff and students.
Grade : WLUSA-08
Salary : $33.75 – $39.72
Salary Notes : This is a full-time, limited term position until August 28, 2020. The anticipated start date for this position is June 3, 2019.
