This role will focus on operating engineering and performance reporting.

Hydro One’s Operating Centre in Barrie is the central nervous system for Hydro One’s Transmission and Distribution system. From this location our team operates Ontario’s electricity grid. Men and women at the Centre remotely control more than 350 stations serving over a million connected customers.

This senior technical role combines the management of the real time operational technical support activities, day ahead and near term assessment and support as well as long term operational technical support for the planning, sustainment and capital investment activities.

In this role you will assume the accountability for approving all operational instructions and overseeing the activities related to the System Operations Division’s extensive Document Library, Standards and R&D programs as well as the Reliability Compliance. Additionally, the role will oversee System Operations regulatory filings for Transmission and Distribution and performance reporting.

General Accountabilities:

  • Oversee the Operating Engineering activities related to Real Time and Day Ahead Technical Support for Hydro One’s high and low voltage grid.
  • Technical interface with internal and external customers such as IESO and other market participants.
  • Oversee the Operating Engineering activities related to Sustainment / Capital Project Technical Support for new asset additions and customer connections to the Hydro One’s high and low voltage grid.
  • Oversee the Operating activities related to the System Operating Division’s document management system and all standards/procedures used in Real Time operations.
  • Oversee the Operating activities related to System Operating Division’s Standards Review, Research & Development.
  • Provide advice to Director System Operations Support and Vice President System Operations on effectiveness of team members for future involvement in regulatory matters.
  • In collaboration with Hydro One’s Regulatory Division you will provide advice and guidance to System Operations relating to regulatory policies and strategies, implications and the appropriateness of various management processes and practices on policy application and interpretation.
  • Support and develop the business relationships needed between System Operations, Asset management and Hydro Regulatory Division, other utilities and industry associations to ensure Hydro One interests are understood and positions, as appropriate.
  • Oversee the preparation of operating evidence in support of Hydro One’s Transmission and Distribution rate filing; ensuring alignment with the business objectives of the company and achieving efficient and favourable OEB decisions
  • Oversee in the development and review responses to interrogatories and undertakings; development and review of Hydro One Argument and reply argument for filing with the OEB in support of HONI’s multiyear rate Tx and Dx applications.
  • Working in close collaboration with Director System Operations Support develop a system performance reporting strategy for System Operations
  • Oversee all of System Operations performance reporting working with other LOB to ensure that accurate, efficient and timely reporting
  • Responsible for promoting and maintaining teamwork with peers and subordinates.
  • Responsible to carry out full management duties and provide leadership expertise related to the administration of assigned personnel.
  • Challenge current efficiencies, processes and methodologies providing innovative ideas and solutions
  • Provide staff members with appropriate knowledge, skill set, work procedures and equipment to drive responsible behavior for a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Supervise staff; both unionized and management; provide guidance and recommendations on personnel issues such as staff changes, promotions, hiring, firing and maintaining discipline

Accountability for the outputs of others:

  • Set the appropriate context for subordinates such as corporate strategies and policies, accountabilities, tasks, budget and programs, compliance and performance targets, expectations for continuous improvement, etc.
  • Set an effective framework of policies and procedures for the work of the department.
  • Know and ensure own and subordinates’ compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, and all corporate policies and procedures, and generally accepted practices relating to the work of the unit.
  • Establish a two-way working relationship with subordinates to solicit their views on conditions and potential changes effecting their work, and continuous improvement opportunities.

Selection Criteria:

  • Must be able to manage stressful and time sensitive situations
  • Must be willing to respond quickly to emergencies to support a 7/24 environment
  • Engineering experience in understanding and applying the fundamentals of Power System and related equipment, standards and practices.
  • Requires extensive knowledge of electrical theory related to operating transmission and distribution electrical power systems and equipment.
  • The role requires, in depth understanding of the Power System overall structure at both transmission and distribution levels, as well as interdependencies with the IESO and other Market Participants.
  • Ability to understand and apply Reliability Compliance standards and Market Rules
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and report on events, assessments or instructions that are critical for operating
  • Good understanding of Lines and Stations Equipment, P&C principles, Telecom and Auxiliary equipment
  • Collaboration and extensive Customer Focus, Negotiation, Business and Project Management skills, Report Writing and Delivering Presentations are essential to be successful in this role.
  • Excellent communication skills, both internal and external, with ability to quickly report event in a concise professional format. Also requires the ability to produce detailed technical and operational reports to various stakeholders and agencies as required.
  • Experience working with unionized collective agreements.
  • Requires a thorough knowledge of the OH&S Act & Regulations
  • A minimum of 10-12 years of industry experience combined with, quick decision skills and a good balance of practical and theoretical engineering is required. Specialization or experience with power systems is preferred.
  • Must be an Engineer and eligibility to be a licensed as a Professional Engineer within the Province of Ontario (PEO).

  • Valid Ontario driver license and ability to travel.
