Reporting to the Manager, Telecom Operations, Hydro One Telecom, successful candidate will provide project implementation, maintenance and technical support services associated with Optical and Data networks serving internal and external customers. Taking up on-call duties as required.
Perform telecommunications engineering/operations work of major complexity including design, installation, and maintenance of telecommunications infrastructure such as IP/MPLS data networks, SONET and DWDM networks.
Data facilities, Wired/Wireless fixed and mobile transmission systems and other telecom systems for commercial and eHealth Ontario networks.
Perform maintenance, operation and service support and management functions on various telecom networks. Develop, implement and monitor corrective and preventive maintenance plans.
Provide project management support on telecom projects including, scheduling, estimating of requirements and costs, technical specifications, design work, tendering and resource requirements. Ensure the work or projects remain on schedule and within the approved budget.
Maintain current knowledge of specific areas of IP/MPLS, Data and Optical networking technologies, wired/wireless telecom systems, voice/data technologies and other computer/telecommunication technologies, commercial service offerings and respective tariffs. This includes new or revised vendor equipment, software, procedures or applications that may be available. Recommend changes that will result in better work program and participate in planning of future work programs.
Develop technical policies and guidelines for provisioning and operations with the objective of improving operational efficiencies, network stability and maintainability of the Optical (SONET/DWDM) and IP/MPLS Data networks managed by the department.
Develop and maintain network monitoring tools/systems using the built-in network management features of network elements.
Plan and execute optical and data network sustainment programs, system upgrades and changes.
Conduct studies, investigate and provide remedial measures for problems and faulty operation of telecommunications systems. Analyze performance of systems. Develop alternatives, assess and make recommendations for improved performance and future designs.
Develop and prepare telecommunication plans to meet customer and Corporate requirements. Recommend proposals for integrated telecommunication services based on cost/benefit model.
Inspect quality and workmanship of work delivered by other internal teams or external service providers. Direct the service providers to correct deficiencies, if any.
For assigned work or project, collaborate with customer, other divisional staff and external parties in correlating telecom facilities and to obtain concurrence with the schedule. Co-ordinate schedules to meet in-service dates and revise accordingly. Check progress of work, investigate delays and take corrective actions.
Provide on-call support to maintain the reliable operations of the telecommunication networks as required.
Perform other duties as required.
In-depth knowledge of IP/MPLS and optical transport protocols and key networking and security technologies – SONET, DWDM, Ethernet Switching, OTN, IP/MPLS Routing & Switching and related technologies.
Experience in diagnoses and troubleshooting of problems within complex telecommunication networks
Relevant industry certifications will be a plus
Broad and detailed knowledge of systems and equipment used to implement and support telecom network management interfaces
Essential Knowledge, Experience and Qualifications:
Good verbal and written communication skills
Analytical and resourceful
Requires experience in the design, construction, installation and maintenance of telecommunications equipment to be aware of the various characteristics and application of procedures associated with operating and maintenance problems.
Requires experience to be familiar with the organization structure, the role and responsibilities, procedures and practices.
Requires excellent customer service skills to deal effectively with customers’ problems, and to make recommendations that add value to the customer’s business.
Requires experience with various software applications such as Granite Xing, HP Service Desk, ARC FM, NOMS, MS Word, Excel, MS Project, and Visio to produce various technical reports.
A period of over 6 years and up to and including 8 years is considered necessary to gain this experience.
