New Democrat MP Romeo Saganash’s backbench bid to formally commit Canada to harmonizing federal law with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) is poised to make it through a critical stage in its journey through the Upper House as the ABORIGINAL AFFAIRS committee heads into clause-by-clause review.
Depending on how quickly the line-by-line analysis proceeds, the bill could be back on the Senate floor for a final round of debate by the end of the week, as could the government’s proposal to preserve and protect Indigenous languages, which is also up for clause-by-clause today.
Meanwhile, MPs on the JUSTICE committee will take a brief break from back-to-back closed door sessions to work on their reports on the criminalization of non-disclosure of HIV status and online hate to hear from Conservative MP James Bezan, who will lay out the rationale behind his private members’ proposal to tighten sentencing laws.
