The Simcoe County District School board would do well to consider naming the new Barrie high school after one of our Indigenous citizens, past or present, at a time when Indigenous rights are being challenged by inconsiderate governments and corporations.
Each school’s name is either a reference to the earlier European colonial history, a titular geographical description, or a Roman Catholic saint?
Why not celebrate and revere the history of Huronia at large, which saw thriving settlements, by turns, of Huron-Wendat and Haudenosaunee communities? The name “Wendat” translates as “people of the island,” but both communities originated from regions that were home to large lakes and had made for themselves capable reputations as mariners.
It would be a small gesture that may help overcome racial stereotypes and bitter animosities that have contributed to the present situation of railway blockages and unhelpful communication.
