HAMILTON – The wife of a man charged with second-degree murder has testified there had been numerous break-ins and car thefts in their rural Ontario community in the months before her husband shot and killed a man.

Peter Khill’s wife, Melinda Benko, told jurors she woke her husband up in the early hours of on February 4th, 2016, after she heard loud knocking or banging noises outside their home near Hamilton.

She says Khill got his shotgun from the bedroom closet, loaded it and headed out the back door while she looked out the window.

Benko says she saw the silhouette of a person in the passenger seat of their truck, then a blinding light coming from the breezeway between the house and garage.

Peter Khill claims that Jon Styres, a 29-year-old Indigenous man from the nearby Six Nations Reserve, was trying to steal his truck.

The 30-year-old military reservist and millwright has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder.
