On the 150th anniversary of Manitoba becoming Canada’s fifth province through the Manitoba Act 1870, the central role of Louis Riel and the Métis Nation in the founding of the province is being being commemorated in banners along Confederation Boulevard.

The banner highlights the role of the Métis Nation in Manitoba’s entry into Confederation. The Banner features Louis Riel’s stylized portrait consisting of multi-coloured lines and dots harmonized with the strands of a centre fléchée and beads of floral patterns which are recognized symbols of the Métis Nation. The colours and graphic of the sash are modelled after Riel’s own. Also featured are the infinity symbol on a blue field which makes up the Métis Nation flag, and the buffalo which serves as an icon for Manitoba. This themed partner banner was a joint effort of the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Métis Nation.
