The Canadian Bar Association (CBA) has created a task force to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (TRC) Calls to Action and establish “a mutually respectful relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada.”
The Truth and Reconciliation Task Force is made up of CBA members from across Canada and will be co-chaired by Kerry Simmons, the CBA’s outgoing president, and Magnolia Unka-Wool, of the Toronto firm Olthuis Kleer Townshend LLP. The group’s term, which started in August, will last until January 2019.
According to a CBA release, the association has been championing the TRC’s recommendations since 2015, urging the government to adopt all 94 Calls to Action. It also passed a resolution at the August 2016 CBA council meeting to set out the CBA’s own commitment to advance the Calls to Action internally.
