Treaties Recognition Week is Nov 4 – Nov 10, 2019. The week provides a recurring opportunity for teachers to plan curriculum-linked learning activities about treaties during the school year and will help promote awareness of treaties in the broader public. The library has a wealth of print and electronic resources that you can incorporate into your curriculum.
The Library installed a copy of the Robinson-Superior Treaty on the first and second floors of the library. These two plaques have been placed on the wall to remind everyone that walks into the Paterson Library Commons that we are on land at the base of Anemki Wajiw beside Gitchigami, home to Anishinaabek and Métis people. It is a reminder that all Canadians are treaty people, not just the people that live on Fort William First Nation in the Robinson Superior Treaty of 1850. But most importantly, it is a reminder of the work we need to do in order to mend the relationship between the parties signatory to this treaty. Furthermore, all of us that currently live, work and learn on these grounds need to reconcile with the land.
To understand the complexity of the relationship between Canada and Indigenous people we need to start with learning about the difference between colonial and Indigenous perceptions of land and treaties. The colonial/governmental view of land is, that land is an asset or resource, something that can be own or governed. The Indigenous perception of land is completely different. In the Indigenous worldview, humans are just visitors on this earth and the land governs humans.
It is the Paterson Library Commons mission to:
- Bring programming and resources to this academic community so that we can continue to learn, grow and prosper by creating knowledge of Indigenous knowledge and protocols.
- Create programming that supports the growth and exploration of Indigenous culture.
- Provide inclusive and safe environments for people to propel their personal and professional growth.
