Korah Collegiate Native Studies class creates unique memorial for St. Aloysius Cemetery

PRINCE TOWNSHIP — Among the grave stones and wooden crosses in Gros Cap’s St. Aloysius Cemetery sits a unique wooden structure that acknowledges the Indigenous roots of the deceased.

The structure, an Anishinaabe spirit house, was a gift from students in Korah Collegiate’s Native Studies class, who placed it in the cemetery last week following a ceremony led by Chief Dean Sayers, of the Batchewana First Nation, and several Anishinaabe elders, some with ancestors buried in St. Aloysius.

NiiMiiKii Benese, a member of the Batchewana community, also attended to explain the significance of the rites.
