First Nation leaders are celebrating a recent court ruling on mining exploration.

An Ontario court judge overturned a drilling exploration permit issued by the provincial government to Landore Resources against the objections of the Eabametoong (Fort Hope) First Nation.

The court ruled Ontario failed to consult honourably with the community and that Landore did not properly carry out its duty to consult as it was told to by the province.

Chief Elizabeth Atlookan states it is unfortunate they had to take the legal route to fight for their “rights and way of life.”
