First air to carry a record number of passengers this week
December 15, 2014 — Iqaluit, Nunavut and Ottawa, Ontario — The Airline of the North will carry a record number of passengers this week. Ahead of the Christmas holidays, thousands of passengers are expected to travel via First Air, the North’s largest scheduled carrier.
The airline expects 6,126 First Air passengers on this week’s scheduled services, a significant increase over last year. The Friday before Christmas is expected to be the airline’s busiest day as many Northerners plan to spend the holiday with family and friends or travel south for last-minute Christmas shopping.
Demand tends to be higher than capacity and this year even flights surrounding the predicted busy days are filling up, despite additional scheduled flights. Overall, the next few days are going to be very busy for First Air and Northern airports.
“We look forward to serving all our passengers during this festive season and are proud of this record achievement. On behalf of all First Air staff, I would like to thank our passengers and cargo customers for their confidence in 2014. It’s great to end the year with a record number of passengers travelling”, said Bert van der Stege, VP Commercial at First Air.
At this busy time, the airline has added extra capacity on some key routes such as Iqaluit-Ottawa, Yellowknife-Edmonton and Kuujjuaq-Montreal. Some routes will operate double daily flights to allow for more seating and cargo space. Traditionally, the airline also runs an inter-community Christmas schedule to allow better connection between Northern communities and ensure family and friends can be together during the festive season. The inter-community service is very popular, which results in a limited number of seats on some of these flights, so book quickly to avoid disappointment.
First Air has been connecting the people of the North for over 65 years and offers cargo, charter and scheduled services to more Northern destinations than any other airline. First Air is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Makivik Corporation and has over 1,000 employees, of which more than 450 work and live in the North. For more information please visit www.firstair.ca.
