Flood map for Sudbury’s Junction Creek to be updated – The Sudbury Star

The flood map of Junction Creek will get a much-needed update thanks to a two-year, $360,000 project.

The updated maps and models will provide the City of Greater Sudbury and Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation with a tool to help guide land-use policies and decisions, officials said.

They said identifying the boundaries of a potential flood event is critical to support informed investments to reduce the impacts of flooding on the more than 3,500 properties located either partially or completely in the floodplains of Junction Creek, which snakes through much of the city.

“Weather-related natural disasters are getting more severe, more frequent, more damaging and more expensive,” Sudbury MP Paul Lefebvre said in a release. “This is a threat not only to the safety of our communities, but to our economic stability.
