Gord Downie’s Indigenous-issues mission to be carried on at star-studded show – Toronto Star

When Tragically Hip singer Gord Downie left this mortal coil two years ago, he had unfinished business.

After completing what would be his final cross-Canada tour with The Tragically Hip, Downie completed work on “Secret Path,” an album documenting the tribulations of the late Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old Anishinaabe youth who was plucked from his family, sent to a residential school in Kenora over 600 km away and lost his life from starvation and exposure in attempt to return his home.

It was a powerful statement that drew attention to the need to acknowledge and explore reconciliation — and Downie’s last public performance at Roy Thomson Hall on Oct. 21, 2016, was dedicated to recreating the album.
