Group hosts fast to demonstrate against domestic violence – Timmins Daily Press
On Thursday, the friendship centre invited men to fast from sunrise to sunset as a demonstration of support to end violence against women.

Gender inequality was never part of Indigenous tradition or culture.
In fact, many First Nation communities in Ontario and the West Coast were matriarchal societies, where women held influential positions and had a strong political voice.
Pierre Belec, coordinator of the I Am A Kind Man program at the Timmins Native Friendship Centre, said much of that changed with colonialism.
“When the first Europeans came, they refused to include women in their conversations. So right from when the boats first landed, women were not looked at as equals and they were forced to take those steps back.”
