Hope Bay case wrapping up – Wiarton Echo

Members of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation have voted in favour of a proposal to settle litigation between the First Nation and the Canadian government over cottages at Hope Bay.
In Friday’s vote, 82 per cent of the close to 500 band members who voted were in favour of directing their council to sign the agreement to settle the litigation.

While the proposed settlement still had to be signed, Neyaashiinigmiing chief Greg Nadjiwon said Monday that he was relieved that it appeared an end is near to the long-running dispute.

“It was a long way from a win-win to begin with, but I think at the end we came to as a good a resolution as we could in the day,” said Nadjiwon. “This went on through I believe five chiefs, so now we are able to come this close to putting it to bed.”

He expressed frustration at the amount of time it has taken to reach a resolution, but thinks the First Nation has now accomplished what it set out to do.
