Kavanaugh calls out feds over appeal of CHRT ruling – Daily Miner and News

The newly re-elected Grand Chief of Treaty 3 is calling out the federal government’s decision to appeal a September Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruling ordering the feds to compensate First Nations children and their families separated by the on-reserve child welfare system.

In an Oct. 7 news release, Francis Kavanaugh called out Liberal leader Justin Trudeau’s decision to appeal the ruling, calling the federal government’s actions “unacceptable.”

“Our Anishinaabe children and families have been irreparably harmed by successive federal governments which refused to acknowledge the discrimination and provide fair and equitable funding for child welfare,” he said in a news release. “All of our children are sacred gifts and our families have the right to access prevention and family preservation-based services which are funded appropriately.”
