THUNDER BAY, ON (November 9, 2018): Members of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) Executive Council will join First Nation and municipal leaders to honour the contributions of veterans of war and peacekeeping operations during Remembrance Day ceremonies across northwestern Ontario on Sunday.

“On Remembrance Day we honour all who have come to the defence of Canada in world wars and conflicts around the globe, as well as those who continue to protect Canada’s interests,” said Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler. “As we commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War One, we honour the warriors who volunteered to enlist as well as the women and families who supported the war efforts at home. That tradition continues today through our members who contribute to our national defence in the Canadian Forces, police services and the Canadian Rangers.”

The Executive Council supports Remembrance Day activities in urban centres and First Nations across NAN territory and will participate in the following services:

  • Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler and Deputy Grand Chief Derek Fox will lay wreaths at the Mount McKay cenotaph at Fort William First Nation.
  • Deputy Grand Chief Walter Naveau will attend the service in Gogama.

The NAN Veteran’s Eagle Staff was presented during Remembrance Day services last year. The Staff includes seven eagle feathers, each representing one of the Seven Grandfather Teachings. It was created by families and communities from across NAN territory to honour those who have come to the defence of Canada.
