Algoma District School Board’s first Indigenous student trustee calls the position’s creation late in coming as some First Nations students don’t feel welcome in the English board’s schools.
Katelyn Wildgoose sat at the table for the first time last Tuesday when trustees held their annual meeting at ADSB’s office on Albert Street East. She’s a Grade 12 student at W.C. Eaket Secondary School in Blind River.
Wildgoose chairs the board’s recently launched Northern Indigenous Youth Council, with membership drawn from each of the public board’s high schools. The leader of that group sits as the Indigenous trustee for a year.
