At first, Cailen Hanzlik wasn’t sure if she wanted to be at the rink in Powassan, practising with some of the best Indigenous female hockey players in the country.

The 16-year-old from Nipissing First Nation had needed to go the extra mile to get there. Most of the other participants in the Hit the Ice reality show, produced by APTN, were invited directly from the top teams participating in the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships.

But Hanzlik, who was part of Team Ontario North, had been eliminated too early in the tournament to have her games seen by the right people.

And for a young goalie looking to be spotted by scouts and to eventually play in college, exposure in those tournament games is crucial. And Hanzlik also wanted to be on Hit the Ice.

“I’ve always watched Hit the Ice,” she says.
