Powwow grounds named in honour of Butch Elliott during 35th annual event – Owen Sound Sun Times

The powwow grounds at Cape Croker Park have been renamed in honour of Arthur “Butch” Elliott, remembered as a defender of First Nations’ rights who reintroduced drumming to his community.

With family members and friends of Elliott in attendance, a renaming ceremony took place Saturday during the 35th annual Neyaashiinigmiing Traditional Powwow.

Geewadin Elliott said he is “overjoyed” that his father has been honoured in this way, noting it was the idea of the Neyaashiinigmiing chief and council.

“My dad valued singing. He loved singing. And he brought the drum back to the community,” he said.
