OTTAWA – A lawyer is accusing the federal government of withholding important documents from people seeking compensation for abuse they say they suffered in Indian residential schools.

David Schulze also says Ottawa misled the committee charged with overseeing the independent assessment process by telling them it had already disclosed all documents related to the years certain residential schools operated.

And he says the committee is unwilling to do anything about it.

Committee chair Mayo Moran says she cannot comment on cases that are currently before an adjudicator, but added the group is not responsible for supervising the conduct of parties to the settlement agreement.

NDP MP Charlie Angus is asking Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould to review the matter.

The claim involves Fort George Anglican Residential School, or St. Philip’s, in northern Quebec and focuses on whether it was a residential school or a day school.
