ROCKINGHAM: Iskwé making sure somebody knows about missing and murdered Indigenous women – Hamilton News

Iskwé was in Winnipeg back in the summer of 2014 when 15-year-old Tina Fontaine’s body was pulled out of the Red River. She remembers it well. Tina’s murder left an indelible mark, not only on her life, but also on the Hamilton-based songwriter’s music.

Iskwé was one of the hundreds of Winnipeggers who marched from the place where Tina’s body found to a downtown park where a new stone monument that had been erected just a few days before to commemorate 1,200 missing or murdered Indigenous women.

It was a key moment in Canadian history. The nation would no longer be allowed to ignore the slaughter. It had to stop.
