Job Description

Special Information:

  • If successful for this temporary work opportunity or assignment, permanent employees who choose to accept said assignment and are members of Local 416 will not retain their permanent status or permanent position and will become a temporary employee.
  • At the end of the temporary work opportunity/assignment, permanent employees will be laid off as a temporary employee and will be subject to the filling of temporary work opportunities/assignments and recall rights in the Local 416 Collective Agreement as a temporary employee.
  • Successful candidates are required to complete the full duration of the temporary work opportunity/assignment.
  • Temporary employees who are members of Local 416, who have made a commitment to a seasonal/non-seasonal opportunity/assignment through the Work Selection process, are eligible to apply and be considered for an assessment only. Temporary employees who are deemed qualified through the assessment process with have their “Personal Work Selection List” (PSWL) updated for the period of time the assessment is valid.
  • This temporary work opportunity or assignment may be subject to bumping in accordance with the “LETTER OF AGREEMENT for Temporary Work Opportunities/Assignments” under the TCEU Local 416 Memorandum of Settlement.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Performs assigned skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the installation, operation and repair of mechanical and electrical equipment and repairs required in connection with general building maintenance
  • Operates a computerized Building Automation System (BAS) to manage/control Building Systems
  • Performs general maintenance work in connection with mechanical and electrical equipment, building services and facilities
  • Maintains a preventative maintenance program and records
  • Operates air conditioning equipment including centrifugal chillers and cooling towers
  • Performs plumbing repairs not requiring the services of a tradesman
  • Effects minor repairs to building equipment and fixtures
  • Performs related maintenance work as assigned including the use of ladders and scaffolding
  • Assists tradesman as required
  • Performs other related work as assigned
  • May be required to work shifts (days, afternoons, midnights and weekends)

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Must have completed secondary school and possess a technician qualification in a building trade or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Experience in the maintenance and operation of large computerized commercial buildings.
  3. Experience in air distribution systems as related to modern air conditioning systems.
  4. Experience in the maintenance of pumps and large air handling equipment.
  5. Experience in the operation and maintenance of fire safety equipment including sprinkler systems and other automatic fire suppression systems.
  6. Experience in troubleshooting electrical faults, with a thorough knowledge of operating generator and UPS power systems.

You must also have:

  • A thorough knowledge of the operation of heating boilers and chemical treatment of chilled and hot water systems.
  • A knowledge of automatic heating and cooling controls including pneumatic systems.
  • An ability to read blueprints.
  • An ability to read and perform tasks outlined in technical manuals and publications.
  • An ability to maintain effective working relations with other staff.
  • An ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • The ability to work all shifts for a 24/7 building operation.
  • May be required to possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and must qualify for the City’s equipment operating permits and requirements.
