Carpentry Crew Member

Michipicoten First Nation (MFN) is a vibrant Anishinaabe community located on the white sands (northeast shores) of Lake Superior near Wawa Ontario. The registered population is approximately 1,300 with 70 citizens living on reserve. With a strong sense of community and cultural identity, Michipicoten First Nation strives to maintain harmony and balance with Mother Earth, neighbouring First Nations, and surrounding communities.

Michipicoten First Nation is seeking experienced Carpentry Crew Member with construction/carpentry and heavy equipment operation experience.  Reporting to the Supervisor – Operations and Maintenance (O&M), the Carpentry Crew Members work as part of a team to maintain the infrastructure of Michipicoten First Nation by assisting with a variety of construction, repairs, and maintenance projects. The Carpentry Crew Member is expected to adhere to established safe working procedures and always wear the proper safety equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform various forms of labour to assist in the successful completion of construction and repair projects from start to finish
  • Operate equipment including chain saw, loader, backhoe, grader, dump truck, snow plow (if certified)
  • Assist with clearing brush and roadways
  • Cut and deliver firewood to citizens
  • Collect and dispose of waste
  • Inform supervisor of the need to order materials as required
  • Complete reports including work plans and time sheets
  • Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on all equipment and tools
  • Load, unload, and identify building materials, machinery, and tools, and distribute them to the appropriate locations
  • Lubricate, clean, maintain, and repair machinery, equipment, and tools
  • Maintain a clean working area free from dirt and debris between tasks and at end of day
  • Ensure high standards of workmanship and efficiency
  • Adhere to established safe working procedures and always wear the proper safety equipment
  • Complete incident reports for accidents and near misses.
  • Participate in mandatory training

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma (minimum)
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a similar role
  • Heavy Equipment Operation Certification & Experience (preferred)
  • Carpentry skills (asset)
  • Knowledge of Ontario and Federal building codes (asset)
  • Driver’s license and access to vehicle
  • Clean Driver’s abstract
  • Ability to obtain a satisfactory criminal records check
  • Knowledge of appropriate materials, methods, and tools required in various construction processes
  • Knowledge of construction equipment safety
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 23 kg)
  • Ability to walk, and stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labour
  • Ability to work in a hot and humid environment
  • Ability to work individually as well as part of a team
  • Knowledge and respect of the Anishinaabe culture

TERM:  1 Full-time, permanent

WORK LOCATION:  Michipicoten First Nation (near Wawa, Ontario)

WAGE RANGE:  $22.29-$24.82/hr dependant upon qualifications and experience.
