Reporting to the Dental Supervisor, this employee will be responsible for connecting with staff from other community-based organizations and working with staff from other Toronto Public health programs (e.g. the Peer Nutrition Program (PNP), Community Nutrition Assistants, Healthy Babies Healthy Children etc.) and staff from other community organisations. The aim of this program is to conduct community outreach, and deliver health promotion on a variety of oral health issues including early childhood tooth decay and seniors’ oral health care. The audience includes parents and caregivers of children less than 7 years of age, participants of other Toronto Public Health programs, seniors groups and the general public.

Major Responsibilities:

Other duties would include:

  • Actively identify and outreach to target populations with special emphasis on high-risk, and marginalised segments of the society
  • Spread awareness regarding the importance of oral hygiene, Early Childhood Tooth Decay (ECTD), nursing bottle caries, senior’s oral health care issues (e.g. diabetes and your health, how does poor oral health affect your overall health)
  • Disseminate information about various stages of dental diseases and their consequences
  • Lead, and facilitate discussion on the importance of healthy eating and nutrition on dental health to the public (parents, caregivers and senior groups)
  • Provide information on the importance of healthy teeth and their relationship/effect on healthy eating, good nutrition, and on growth and development
  • Increase awareness about the Toronto Public Health Dental program and other relevant programs
  • Plan and deliver assigned information sessions to parents, caregivers and seniors
  • Provide in-services/information to the staff of partner agencies
  • Facilitate group discussions, engage the audience on dental issues and their relationship to healthy eating and nutrition in a variety of different languages
  • Collect information and prepare educational materials in support of educational efforts
  • Maintain current knowledge of community services, resources, policies, programs, procedures and issues affecting client population
  • Develop and nurture neighbourhood connections and recognition within catchment area served using community development principles
  • Act as a liaison to facilitate referrals and access to other relevant TPH, City and community services to enhance health of client groups
  • Liaise with cultural mediators especially for new comers in order to facilitate integration with social and health care services in Canada
  • Prepare and deliver culturally appropriate presentations along with other health professionals, to ethno-cultural agencies and interested groups. Engage with knowledgeable cultural leaders in the target communities to identify cultural practices relevant to oral health matters
  • Schedule workshops and provide training sessions
  • Collaborate with local agencies to promote oral health care within ethno-racial/cultural communities
  • Collect and compile statistical information. Complete and maintain records of contacts, outreach activities and group sessions
  • Review program activities and group interactions with the dental manager
  • Refer program participants to Public Health Dental Clinics, Public Health Nurses, Public Health Dieticians and other professionals as needed
  • Attend and participate in team, regional meetings and other meetings as necessary

Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

  1. Peer educator experience and training in a community setting to conduct health promotion among parents and caregivers.
  2. Experience in the facilitation of group discussions.
  3. Experience working in various communities in a culturally appropriate outreach capacity.
  4. Fluency in Slovak is required.
  5. Possession of a valid Class “G” Ontario Driver’s License and access to a vehicle.

You must also have:

  • Ability to communicate in Hungarian or Russian is an asset.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to meet the needs of the community, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to plan, organize and problem solve.
  • Able to transport presentation equipment and supplies to various locations in the community.
  • Knowledge of dental health issues.
  • Computer skills, including email, MS Word, Power Point and Excel are assets
  • Good oral and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills.
