Coordinator, Education Support Program

(Full‐time, Indeterminate)

Tungasuvvingat Inuit’s (TI) purpose is to empower and enhance the lives of Inuit. Since 1987, TI has been operating in Ottawa as a community‐based counseling and resource centre.

Position Summary

The Coordinator, Education Support Program primarily focuses on: outreach and engagement, partnership development, and stakeholder relations. He/she provides intensive guidance, case management and develops appropriate supports and methods to ensure the development of the full potential of post‐secondary students.

The Education Support Program helps current and future Inuit post‐secondary students to enhance their full potential and succeed at college and university programs. The program focuses on 3 areas:

Supporting post‐secondary students and their families Secondary to postsecondary transition supports

Building awareness of post‐secondary education programs


Supervises and assigns duties to the Program Assistant, sets priorities and ensures program objectives are followed

Determines with youth, what services are needed to meet education and academic goals

Helps clients locate and apply for post‐secondary education and funding programs that match the clients’ interests, academic level and eligibility

Provides education guidance and support:

Assists clients with education planning and funding issues

Assists clients in identifying and addressing barriers to education and academic progress

Provides post‐secondary education and funding program information and advises clients on eligibility and other program requirements

Delivers career exploration workshops and activities

Coordinates youth education support activities, projects and services

Provides referrals to appropriate internal and external youth service providers. Captures program participant data and reports on programs and services

Assists the program manager in the administration and management of the overall program and the program budget

Abides by TI policies and procedures

Other activities as may be required and related to the position

Education and Experience

Post‐secondary education in social work, counselling or a related discipline

At least three years’ relevant experience. Significant experience may substitute for post‐ secondary training

Experience working with youth

Experience with group facilitation

Experience with program administration

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Strong initiative; motivated and able to work independently Strong leadership and management skills

Proven track record of dependability and reliability Outstanding organizational skills

Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills Ability to develop and deliver programming

Ability to work effectively in stressful situations and under tight deadlines Fluency in Inuktitut and English preferred

Knowledge and appreciation of Inuit culture, values and beliefs A valid driver license is required

Computer literacy (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, email, internet)

Availability to work frequent evenings and weekends as required

Working Conditions

The Coordinator, Education Support Program works both in and outside the office as required. Frequent travel within the city is required. Frequent evenings and weekends are required Deadline for applications is July 10, 2016.
