Position Summary: This course explores leadership models, approaches, roles, and responsibilities for student affairs professionals in higher education. Student affairs professionals will learn to engage in strategic and purposeful planning by examining Student Affairs components such as student life and engagement, conduct and judicial affairs, career development and services, resident life and education, athletics and recreation, diversity and equity, social media and digital citizenship, and accessibility and accommodation. Furthermore, the course will provide an overview of university bi-cameral governance to develop an understanding of how student affairs components are developed, approved, and implemented successfully in higher education contexts. Half-course, 0.50 credit units, one term.

Qualifications – Required: Doctoral degree in education or related discipline; post-secondary teaching experience in the content area

Courses created specifically for online instruction have been collaboratively designed by a content expert (normally a faculty member) and an instructional designer and digital media and educational technology specialists. Online course development is guided by instructional design strategies and makes use of pedagogically led technology.  Online courses are intentionally developed for instructors and students to be separated by space (location) and/or time (often both).

Remote instruction, as the term is used here, uses technology-enabled tools and software to facilitate course delivery when in-person instruction is not possible in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Remote” instruction is not directly comparable to “online course” instruction. The difference is not in the quality of the content, but in the design of content delivery.

The Faculty of Education has always worked collaboratively amongst full time and part time instructors to offer active and authentic learning environments.  Our individual courses are part of a larger program intended to address the strategic learning goals of the bachelor of education program and we will continue to put our learners at the centre of our design.  At this time, instruction for the fall term has been designated as a mix of “remote” and face-to-face courses.  We have worked hard to organize the schedule to address specific content of courses, to retain the flexibility of remote instruction for both faculty and teacher candidates, and to follow the safety guidelines presented by the university regarding room capacity and cohort modeling. We have completed a full year of the program in 2020-2021 in a remote context and have learned a great deal that we can share with each other.  There are a great number of supports available through Educational Technologies and Teaching and Learning at Laurier and we anticipate continued mentorship and collaboration amongst our own faculty.  We look forward to advancing our thinking and continuing our innovative approach to teacher education.
