Position Summary:

Reporting to the Manager of Academic Accommodations, the Intake and Accommodation Coordinator is the first point of contact within Accessible Learning Centre (ALC) for students, Laurier faculty and staff, and third parties with inquiries about services and supports for students with disabilities.

The incumbent advises on the university’s legislative obligations and its policy for accommodating students with disabilities. The Intake and Accommodation Coordinator supports students through the ALC registration process by advising them on the university’s disability documentation requirements, appropriately soliciting information required to support registration, and linking them with accommodation consultants and other ALC professionals to facilitate the development of academic accommodation and support plans.

The Intake and Accommodation Coordinator designs and approves academic accommodation and support plans for students with disabilities and liaisons with faculty, staff, and administrators across the university to support their implementation.


Coordination and Connection

  • Respond to students and others about the eligibility of requests for supports and services through the ALC.
  • Guide students transitioning to university or adjusting to a new disability as they navigate the registration process.
  • Connect with students, ALC staff, university personnel (e.g., staff in Health and Wellness), health care providers and other supporters to assess the level of immediacy of student requests and facilitate supports accordingly. Report any risk management concerns related to the student’s request or its immediacy to the Manager as appropriate.
  • Assess eligibility for support through the ALC for students who do not have disability documentation, are awaiting documentation, or presenting with an urgent need. Approve and implement interim accommodations as appropriate.
  • Monitor the queue of students waiting for initial consultant appointments, assess immediacy of need, and facilitate interim accommodations as appropriate.
  • Coordinate student appointments with the ALC receptionist to ensure student flow from registration to initial consultant appointments is smooth and timely
  • Coordinate reminders and communications to registered students about upcoming deadlines (e.g., booking exam accommodations).
  • Support exam coordinators responding to requests for exam bookings received after published deadlines by facilitating communication with accommodation consultants, exam staff, and instructors as needed.

Disability Documentation Review

  • Review disability documentation for compliance with the university’s disability documentation requirements to assess the student’s eligibility for registration with the ALC. Documentation may include psychoeducational, neuropsychological, psychiatric, or medical assessments, university disability documentation forms, letters, or other reports.
  • Seek clarification from students and/or their issuing health professional about results or missing information.
  • Advise students when new or updated documentation is needed to support their request for services. Facilitate student referrals to qualified professionals for updated assessments or documentation.
  • Interpret and summarize assessment reports, highlighting psychometric and other assessment scores/results, and clinical interpretations that link to the student’s functional limitations in the academic setting.
  • Provide professional expertise and leadership on reviewing and updating the university’s documentation requirements and interpreting and applying disability documentation to the academic accommodation planning process.

Decision Making

  • Determine if disability documentation complies with university or government requirements.
  • Identify accommodation needs of students with disabilities and optimal method of implementation.
  • Determine urgency of student requests and delivers appropriate responses and supports.
  • Determine if requests for accommodated exams received from students after published deadlines should be granted and facilitates the necessary arrangements, including communications with instructors.
  • Determine the level of response needed when dealing with a student presenting in a crisis and takes appropriate action.
  • Reconcile or prioritize conflicting demands on time.
  • Determine the accommodations, resources, and services needed to support the student’s access to the learning environment and facilitates connections to these supports.
  • Interpret and advise on policies, procedures, practices, and programs.
  • Determine when student matters and situations must be escalated for review and response.
  • Assess workflow between registration and initial consultant appointments and identifies opportunities for service enhancements.

Student Support

  • Conduct intake interviews with students to understand their lived experience and knowledge of their disability, especially as it relates to the academic environment.
  • In collaboration with the student, integrate interview results with the student’s disability documentation to create an academic accommodation and support plan that is appropriate for the academic setting and that addresses barriers the student experiences in the learning environment.
  • Consult with faculty and administration to ensure recommended accommodations supports academic integrity and maintains essential requirements.
  • Consider the intersectionality of a student’s identity or affiliation (e.g., graduate, international or a co-operative education student) in developing their academic accommodation and support plan.
  • Modify academic accommodation and support plans as needed, especially if the student’s disability or academic program changes.
  • Liaison with accommodation support services within the ALC, across the university or off campus to ensure the student’s accommodation and support needs are supported. This includes facilitating their access to transcription, adaptive technology, and learning strategy supports.
  • Facilitate student communication with instructors or other university personnel about implementing approved accommodations and supports.
  • Advise students, instructors and others on interpreting and implementing accommodations, and on legislative and policy requirements as appropriate.
  • Problem-solve when questions or disputes arise and support both students and instructors in moving forward with implementing accommodations.
  • Support students in advocating for themselves, or advocate on their behalf as appropriate.
  • Support the ALC accommodation consultants in case managing for students with disabilities who needs are complex, and support connections for the students with on or off-campus supports and resources.
  • Respond to queries from parents within the confines of privacy legislation.
  • Support the Manager’s response to complaints from students, parents, instructors or others by gathering information from involved parties as appropriate.


  • Maintain appropriate documentation of interactions with students and related parties, and actions taken.
  • Appropriately use and maintain confidential health and education information in accordance with university policy and relevant privacy legislation.
  • Support the Manager in tracking applications for the Ontario Bursary for Students with Disabilities and internal university bursaries.
  • Consult with personnel across the university, including within academic units, related to student academic accommodations and supports, and to advise on related issues as they arise.
  • Consult with ALC colleagues and cross-campus partners to regularly review and improve processes.


  • Professional qualification at the level of a Master’s degree in a field related to disability (i.e., Occupational Therapy, Disability Studies, Education, Social Work, Rehabilitation, or related field).
  • Three or more years’ experience working with individuals with disabilities, including interviewing, advising, case management or case coordination.
  • Three or more years’ experience interpreting disability documentation, including psychoeducational, neuropsychological, psychiatric, and other medical reports, and applying results to confirm the presence of a disability and identify associated functional limitations.
  • Sound knowledge of human rights legislation, accessibility standards, and other policies with a demonstrated ability to interpret and apply legislative provisions and requirements to the post-secondary environment.
  • Proficiency with word-processing and database applications including Microsoft Office and client-management systems. Strong aptitude for computer-based information systems and internet-based tools.
  • Demonstrated skills in responding to individuals presenting in a crisis, problem-solving and facilitating access to appropriate supports.
  • Knowledge of supports and strategies to address access issues for people with disabilities, including familiarity with adaptive/assistive technologies, accessible learning and other disability-related intervention and strategies.
  • Demonstrated understanding of disability issues for students with disabilities in the post-secondary environment.
  • Experience in successfully navigating and engaging with institutional systems, services, and supports in a university environment would be considered an asset.
  • An equity-minded advising approach focused on creating a welcoming and inclusive space supportive of student engagement and success. Demonstrates sensitivity and awareness to the needs of equity-deserving groups and marginalized populations.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, conflict resolution and decision-making skills are essential.
  • Ability to adapt communication style and response to audience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with a wide variety of individuals, including students, parents, faculty, staff, administrators, and health care professionals.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment and with people of diverse identities, backgrounds, and experiences.

Rate of Pay: $37.06 – $43.58 per hour
