Position Summary:

Reporting to the AVP, Facilities and Asset Management, the Sustainability Manager will be responsible to:

  • Continue to advance Laurier’s position as a recognized leader in sustainability
  • Develop, implement, and manage campus-wide sustainability programs at Laurier, and enhance the existing culture of sustainability, which will be reflected in all of its functions and operations, resulting in tangible environmental, economic and social benefits
  • Facilitate cost savings by staying abreast of current and developing green technology
  • Monitor progress and provide advice on next steps for the Carbon Reduction Roadmap
  • Identify government and industry incentives through strategic planning and project management
  • Update and Implement Laurier’s Sustainability Action Plan
  • Complete and present to Board the Sustainability Annual Report

This position has a university-wide mandate and is based at the Waterloo Campus.  The incumbent provides leadership in a multi-campus environment, requiring regular interaction, communication and collaboration with staff and stakeholders at the Waterloo Campus, Brantford Campus and with external partners. The Manager will ensure the unit’s policies, programs and services are delivered equitably across all campuses and reflect the needs of local stakeholders.

Accountabilities:

Leadership

  • Participate in internal and external committees and groups as a Laurier sustainability representative and specialist
  • Provide technical expertise for the technology the University acquires and how sustainability is incorporated into capital projects
  • Promotes the institutional values of equity, diversity, inclusion and enhancing Indigeneity within the sustainability portfolio
  • Act as a resource and mentor for community and campus events
  • Present and lecture at internal and external courses, seminars, conferences and learning series to advance the reputation of Laurier sustainability efforts

Planning & Implementation

  • Oversee the development, updating and implementation of the Laurier Sustainability Action Plan, Climate Action Plan, Energy Management Plan, and other related documents by completing the stakeholder engagement process, engaging with consultants and ensuring detailed measurement and reporting of associated targets, indicators and metrics;
  • Create/update sustainability related university standards, policies, and procedures for Laurier and advise on other university guidance documents as needed
  • Provide leadership and support to diverse student, staff and faculty groups, as necessary, such as the Sustainable Campuses Committee, Sustainability Council, Ecohawks, Enactus, etc.
  • Conduct analyses to support university level strategic planning; develop accompanying plans and presentations on sustainability data
  • Analyze the success of programs and projects to determine ongoing viability using quantitative data from tracking systems and qualitative data from the Sustainability Action Plan, Climate Action Plan and elsewhere

Curriculum & Program Development

  • Liaise with the VP Academic’s Office and Faculties to provide input on the success and improvement of existing sustainability programs
  • Develop new campus programs in areas of sustainable education and operations and provide ongoing support
  • Support Faculty in developing new courses and majors in sustainability that meet the needs of a diverse student population and have an impact on the quality of the student experience
  • Collaborate with faculty to provide courses in active and community service learning with the Sustainability Office
  • Provide support and direction in student academic projects related to sustainability

Project Management

  • Identify and/or participate in capital projects that improve the sustainable standing of Laurier, including areas such as GHG reduction, energy management, deferred maintenance and other opportunities
  • Liaise with consultants on sustainability and energy related contracts as required to ensure overall mission and targets are met, that the necessary community stakeholders are involved and that the project is properly communicated internally and externally
  • Provide sustainability expertise for the planning and design phase of new builds and major renovations
  • Engage with both government and diverse non-governmental  organizations to manage and participate in community-level projects that benefit Laurier’s sustainability goals

Operations

  • Document and analyze energy consumption and GHG emissions (all 3 scopes of energy) on a yearly basis via Sustainable Waterloo’s carbon accounting tool and Laurier’s Energy Management System
  • Develop and improve sustainability services on campus, such as access to local and organic food, gathering spaces, alternative transportation options, water stations, and waste services
  • Advise and support implementation of sustainability initiatives and standards in facilities management

Analytics & Reporting

  • Manage and complete internal reporting requirements based on Laurier sustainability metrics, such as the Annual Sustainability Report based on Laurier’s Sustainability Action Plan (includes GHG reporting), yearly budget expenditures, and audits and assessments as required
  • Manage and complete external reporting requirements from the government and affiliated membership bodies, such as the MOECP, COU, Sustainable Waterloo Region, etc.
  • Oversee the process of major organization-wide sustainability assessment using AASHE’s international STARS framework to maintain and improve Laurier’s international reputation and standing

Budgeting & Administration

  • Manage the sustainability operations budget
  • Forecast and present budget reports to Facilities & Asset Management and WLUSU on a semi annual basis
  • Source and leverage internal and external funding opportunities through levy’s, incentives, government grants, community funds, etc.
  • Present annual sustainability reports and other updates to Laurier governing bodies as required

Management

  • Responsible for the overall management of the Sustainability Office as well as students, volunteers, community partnerships and committee member functions, including hiring and performance management
  • Act as Laurier’s representative for internal and external relations in the area of institutional sustainability

Outreach & Awareness

  • Oversee the Sustainability Office’s outreach strategy as administered by the Communications & Outreach Coordinator, Sustainability Office
  • Liaise with diverse internal and external individuals, groups and communities on events and projects to improve Laurier’s offerings and community involvement

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering or Environmental Science; Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience and leadership in sustainability and sustainability best practices, preferably within a university or other public institutional setting
  • A solid, in depth knowledge base of sustainability matters related to climate change, energy, water, green buildings, technology, transportation, waste management, natural areas and land use is essential
  • Strong analytical, planning, organizational abilities and skills in research, report writing and developing communication strategies.
  • Experience in project and program management, with demonstrated technical knowledge and expertise in leading how sustainability is incorporated into capital projects.
  • Strong public speaking skills and experience in facilitating meetings and building meaningful relationships with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff, organizations and community groups.
  • Commitment to, and demonstrated expertise in, equity, diversity and inclusion and in enhancing Indigeneity as an integral component of the sustainability portfolio.
  • Proven ability to engage stakeholders in initiatives in order to generate interest and participation
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze cost/benefit of future and current programs

Compensation:

Position Grade: MG-2B
Rate of Pay:  $75,667 – $118,229
Hours of Work: This is a full-time, continuing position.
