Managing Lawyer

Job Summary

With low to moderate oversight, responsible for managing a small Staff Legal office in addition to handling complex trial work. Engages in the practice of law and the representation of Zurich insureds in litigation to protect their interests.

Job Qualifications

• Juris Doctor and 8 or more years of experience in the Litigation area

• Member of the Bar in good standing in jurisdiction(s) in which practice is located.
• Experience with Microsoft Office suite and Adobe
• Experience with Lexis or Westlaw
• Knowledge of the insurance industry, claims and the insurance defense litigation legal environment
• Knowledge of the law and procedure
• 3 or more years managing a team of people
• Effective communication skills
• Strong negotiation skills
• Experience working in a team-based environment
• Collaboration skills
• Ability to multi-task and adapt to a changing environment
• Effective problem solving and analytical skills
• Ability to mentor others on trial advocacy

Job Accountabilities – Key Accountabilities

• Drive superior results by providing direction, and technical guidance to team of Staff Legal attorneys handling low to high complexity matters.
• Manage corporate expenses by monitoring file allocations, resources and other expenditures to ensure appropriateness.
• Motivate and lead a high performance team by attracting, onboarding, recruiting and retaining team members.
• Drive the performance management process by communicating job expectations, monitoring and evaluating performance, providing feedback and facilitating employee development per the company´s policies.
• Maintain transparent communication by appropriately communicating organization information to team through department meetings, one-on-one meetings, appropriate email, IM and regular interpersonal communications.
• Create a workplace culture that is consistent with the Zurich mission, vision and Zurich Basics.
• Ensure best outcomes for clients by demonstrating a high level of technical excellence in case handling, trial preparation and presentation and providing guidance and direction to team.
• Drive positive results by correctly applying the law and legal trends, conducting legal analysis and research, preparing legal pleadings and documents, preparing for and managing pre-trial discovery, and participating in judicial or administrative hearings and trials as necessary.
• Achieve customer satisfaction targets by building and maintaining relationships with internal colleagues, external customers and brokers, and analyzing and resolving quality and customer service problems.
• Determine and implement alternative dispute resolution techniques as appropriate, by using effective mediation and negotiation skills within authority limit.
• Maintain professional and technical knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, staying current with industry trends, establishing personal networks and participating in professional societies.
• Contribute to the team effort by accomplishing related results and collaborating on matters as needed.
• Ensure legal compliance by following state and federal laws and regulations.
• Protect Zurich’s reputation by keeping claims information confidential.
