Job Description: Parliamentary Liaison

Reports to: Senior Policy Advisor – Justice and Human Rights
Salary Range: $35,000 – $40,000 (Starting Salary)
Term: To March 31, 2017 with a possibility of extension
Closing Date: Open until filled
Location: Ottawa


The Parliamentary liaison is involved in all aspects of the legal/policy input required from the Native Women’s Association of Canada by the Parliament of Canada. As the liaison between NWAC and the Parliament, the Parliamentary liaison is responsible for reviewing and providing comments on various pieces of legislation on behalf of NWAC. This position will support the mandate of the organization by ensuring that gender and Indigenous perspectives are taken into account during legislation and policy-making. General duties

The NWAC Parliamentary Liaison will:

  • Maintain regular and ongoing communications with key players in Parliament on behalf of NWAC regarding Bills both in the House of Commons and Senate;
  • Actively maintain a strategic legislation review work plan incorporating relevant priorities as identified by NWAC Board and adhering to operational needs;
  • Undertake legal research in support of legislative reform;
  • Prepare environment scans of Parliament as well as International bodies and provide briefs, comments and submissions on legislative issues;
  • Communicate and collaborate with governmental and non-governmental organizations as necessary;
  • Work with other NAOs and NGOs to address potential issues within proposed Bills impacting indigenous women and girls;
  • Write reports, factsheets, briefing notes, shadow reports, or other documents;
  • Perform other related duties as required from time to time.

Academic Background

  • Political Science degree with an empahsis in Canadian Politics

Or any combination, such as:

  • Joint Honours BSocSc in Communication and Political Science
  • Joint Honours BSocSc in Public Administration and Political Science
  • Joint Honours BSocSc in Women’s Studies and Political Science
  • Honours BSocSc in Political Science and Juris Doctor

Key Skills

  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills in both plain language and academic styles;
  • Good critical, analytical, and thinking skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team;
  • Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and organize work effectively and under pressure;
  • Ability to conduct research in cooperation and consultation with diverse stakeholders.

Work/Volunteer Experience

  • Some work or volunteer experience with NGOs, organizations, interest groups, and government or government agencies.

Knowledge Requirements

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the Canadian parliamentary system;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the cultures, histories, and traditions of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and internationally;
  • Knowledge of the principles, values, and mandate of the Native Women’s Association of Canada;
  • Some knowledge of key issues impacting indigenous women and girls in Canada.
  • Bilingualism is an asset.
