Regional Outreach and Support Services Worker (Ottawa)
Reports directly to the Program Manager
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Regional Outreach and Support Services Worker will provide services to eliminate the spread of HIV among Aboriginal people (with emphasis on but not limited to the Inuit community) in the Ottawa region. This position is intended to help improve the lives of Aboriginal People living with HIV/AIDS (APHAs) and those affected or at-risk of HIV in the Ottawa region.
The Outreach and Support Services Worker will provide Harm Reduction Outreach, preventative education, information, and provide and promote programs and services for Aboriginal people in the Ottawa region. This worker shall provide direct client services to APHAs and at-risk Aboriginal people as well as to those affected by HIV/AIDS with Aboriginal populations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-secondary degree/diploma in health, social work, education, counseling or equivalent work experience;
- Demonstrated thorough knowledge of HIV/AIDS and related issues, including GIPA and MEPA;
- Strong inter-personal, verbal and written communications skills;
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Aboriginal Social Determinants of Health;
- Demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal issues, cultures and traditions;
- Previous counseling experience with Aboriginal people;
- Proven ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality;
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to Harm Reduction or the Teaching of Non-interference;
- Fluency in one or more Inuit dialects is required for this position;
- Demonstrated experience in program development and delivery;
- Familiarity with Ocase and Ochart reporting tools and requirements would be an asset;
- Strong computer literacy in a Mac environment as well as social media tools;
- Ability to work flexible hours including evening and weekends;
- Must have a valid driver’s license and own a reliable automobile;
- Self-directed requiring minimal supervision;
- Demonstrated ability to work in an anti-racism, anti-oppression, and sex-positive team environment.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
- Develop, deliver, evaluate and report on preventive education workshops, information and resources to the grassroots and Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal service agencies;
- To provide outreach and direct client services to Aboriginal youth, women, people in prison, street-involved, IDU, MSM, two-spirit and transgender people and Aboriginal people, their “family”, friends, “community” and supports;
- To ensure the Meaningful Engagement of (Aboriginal) People living with HIV/AIDS (MEPA), in the development, delivery, and evaluation of programs, projects, support groups and special events locally and regionally;
- To recruit new members and provide direct supervision of volunteers in collaboration with Head Office;
- To fundraise locally and/or regionally in coordination with Head Office;
- Network, partner and collaborate locally and regionally to ensure access to improved, culturally relevant, accepting and inclusive programs, services and supports from Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal agencies, AIDS Service Organizations and individuals including Elders;
- Keep current with statistics, new developments in the field: vaccine, criminalization, and any shifts affecting Aboriginal access, care, treatment and support;
- Serve on advisories, working groups, committee, research teams, and other bodies at the local, regional and provincial levels;
- Collaborate with other OSSWs of the Strategy on larger projects
