The Senior Finance Clerk is responsible for providing financial and administrative services in maintaining the accounting system.  The Senior Finance Clerk functions within legislative requirements, regulations, policies and procedures and the Mission, Beliefs and Vision of the Garden River First Nation, and contributes to the accomplishment of the strategic priorities.


  • Provides oversight and assistance to accounts payable, receivable payroll and General Ledger functions
  • Assists in managing payroll function and ensuring compliance with statutory and other deductions, ensuring payroll records are maintained to meet legal requirements
  • Assists in maintaining the Chart of Accounts by adding, modifying or deleting account codes
  • Accessing the ACCPAC system to print and post batches in the General Ledger program
  • Providing detailed lists of expenses to programs and preparing journal entries/correcting data entries as required
  • Preparing various reports and tasks to meet monthly obligations and deadlines
  • Reconciling the monthly accounts receivable ledgers A/R lists, water user fees, due from members. Update AIR customers as required
  • Provides oversight for receipts log, and assists in coding for data entry
  • Participating in annual audit as required retrieving files, providing financial documentation and answering questions as required
  • Provides oversight in assisting in preparing/issuing purchase orders, check requisitions, cash receipts, and bank deposits when required
  • Assisting in preparing fiscal year-end financial statements
  • Ensuring that all finance and administration policies and procedures are followed
  • Ensuring compliance with proper financial controls to safeguard all First Nation assets
  • Advising the Controller on financial anomalies or providing suggestions to enhance the First Nations financial operations
  • Providing training/support to trainees, students, co-workers
  • Ensures financial software is maintained and up to date
  • Ensures all bank reconciliations are completed and reconciled with the General Ledger
  • Maintains and updates all financial reporting templates for use by Senior Management
  • Provides assistance to Management and Controller on budgeting, income statements and general financial information
  • Works with Housing to ensure all CMHC information is recorded, maintained and balanced within the CMHC accounting database
  • Performing other related duties as may be required and assigned


  • Required two year college diploma in Business Administration or related field
  • Required two years related experience
  • Knowledge of basic research, how to compile data and prepare reports
  • Exceptional written and communication skills to effectively communicate with co-workers, staff, First Nation members, general public and government staff to convey information
  • Able to use initiative and independent judgement within established practices and policies
  • Flexibility required to keep pace with an ever-changing environment
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and knowledge of the First Nation cultural values and traditions
  • Knowledge of office administration procedures, protocol and operation of office equipment
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of a team
  • Excellent organizational skills, time management skills, interpersonal and communications skills, both oral and written
  • Excellent computer skills (including MS Word, Word Perfect, Excel, Internet, Email, Outlook, and ACCPAC
  • Must undergo a criminal record check prior to employment

The starting wage is $50,400.00
