Tenure-Track Assistant or Associate Professor

The Faculty of Social Work (FSW) at Wilfrid Laurier University’s Kitchener site invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant, or Associate level faculty position commencing July 1, 2022. This position is located on the Kitchener campus in the graduate program serving the MSW and PhD programs. The teaching load for this position is four courses during the academic year (fall, winter, and spring semesters). There are also opportunities to teach within the doctoral and MSW Online programs.

The FSW is located on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishnaabe, and Haudenosaunee peoples. We are working toward a stronger emphasis on decolonizing social work practice and education, and expect the candidate will be able to contribute to this journey.

The FSW offers professional social work programs at the bachelor’s and master’s levels and a research-focused doctoral program. We are devoted to excellence in research, creative and critical thinking, and reflexive practice. The Indigenous Field of Study in the MSW program embraces Indigenous-based learning. We fulfill our mission by advancing multi-disciplinary and marginalized forms of knowledge. Our graduates are committed to constructively engaging and working toward transforming oppressive conditions and structures, and promoting well-being in individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities.

We are eager to welcome a colleague who is interested in contributing to critical approaches to social work research, teaching, and practice – reflecting the FSW’s emphasis on integrative practices and social justice. Integrative practices include an understanding of the intersections of micro/macro processes and practices. The substantive area is open for this position, but we would welcome candidates with expertise in critical disability studies or mad studies/sanism, and critical approaches to substance use and/or aging. We welcome scholarship exploring various levels of practice (e.g., direct practice, policy, organizational change). Expertise in quantitative methodologies is a definite asset.


The successful applicant will (1) hold a PhD, or ABD with a clear path to completion, 2) hold at least one degree in social work or near completion, (3) have a minimum of five years practice experience working with marginalized communities, (4) have teaching experience in social work with demonstrated record of excellence, and 5) have a program of research as evidenced by a record of publication and funding appropriate for the rank.
