MATTAWA— Drive to where the Mattawa River meets the Ottawa River and you will find Marcel Labelle building a traditional 20-foot birch bark canoe with his grandson. Marcelle has named the canoe The Gift and it will be launched at the Mattawa point on August 27 to paddle to Ottawa for the Day of Truth and Reconciliation.

Marcel Labelle is Métis of Algonquin ancestry. His Spirit Name is Mahigan and he is a master birch bark canoe builder, having built canoes from Ottawa to British Columbia.
