FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 3, 2022

OTTAWA – Annual Sisters in Spirit Vigils take place across the country on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, to honour the lives of Indigenous women, gender-diverse, two-spirit, and transgender people who have been murdered or gone missing as part of what a National Inquiry has determined to be a genocide. The Vigils are also times for comforting family members and friends mourning those lost to violence.

Carol McBride, the President of the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC), will join the community leaders attending the vigil in the National Capital. This year, the event in Gatineau and Ottawa is being organized in co-operation with the YWCA.

Participants will march from NWAC’s Social, Cultural and Economic and Innovation Centre in Gatineau to Parliament Hill in Ottawa where words of remembrance will be offered. Media are invited to attend.

March begins: 6:30 pm ET

Where: NWAC’s Social, Cultural and Economic Innovation Centre, 120 Promenade du Portage, Gatineau Que.

March ends: 7 pm ET, to be followed by a ceremony of remembrance

Where: Parliament Hill, Ottawa
