Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak Offers Condolences to the Family of Hoss Lightning
(September 6, 2024 – Unceded Algonquin Territory, Ottawa, Ontario) – Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak extends condolences to the family and friends of Hoss Lightning of Samson Cree Nation after he was shot and killed during an interaction with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Wetaskiwin, Alberta.
“We offer our sympathies to the family of Hoss Lightning, and the entire community of Samson Cree Nation,” said National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak. “The AFN condemns police violence towards First Nations and stands with the family in their call for a transparent investigation to hold the RCMP officers involved accountable.”
“First Nations have continued to call for the use of de-escalation techniques and culturally informed practices in all police interactions to protect all First Nations people,” said National Chief Woodhouse Nepinak. “Immediate changes are needed to ensure our safety. It is critical that we work together to develop and implement strategies that improve the safety of First Nations. We are closely monitoring the investigation led by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team and the RCMP and expect transparency and accountability surrounding the circumstances which resulted in Mr. Lightning’s death.”
