Assembly of First Nations finalizing preparations for delegation to visit with Pope Francis at the Vatican in December 2021

(Ottawa, ON) – The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is releasing today the details of its upcoming delegation to Vatican City in support of Truth and Reconciliation Commission Call to Action #58. In collaboration with the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), the AFN has confirmed plans for 13 delegates to gather with the Holy Father on December 20, 2021. The delegates will have the opportunity to speak to the Holy Father before joining with all Indigenous delegates to hear a response from His Holiness.

“We have called upon His Holiness to apologize to Survivors on our ancestral lands,” said NWT Regional Chief Norman Yakeleya, portfolio holder of Knowledge Keepers, Residential Schools and First Nations Veterans who will be leading the delegation. “It’s encouraging that the Holy See committed to that back in October. Now, our delegation can begin a dialogue about what that apology looks like. Our gathering in December is the next step in completing TRC Call to Action #58.”

The First Nations delegation will include 13 representatives from across Canada and will be announced shortly.

Identified to attend as well is Chief Wilton Littlechild as official delegation spokesperson, Fred Kelly, Spiritual Advisor and Phil Fontaine as Knowledge Keeper.

“I am calling on the church to make a number of reparations to First Nations and all Survivors,” said AFN National Chief RoseAnne Archibald. “The delegation is tasked with engaging His Holiness on meaningful dialogue to ensure reparations, including revoking the 1493 Papal Bull on the Doctrine of Discovery. I look forward to the outcome of this gathering and determining next steps.”

L’Assemblée des Premières Nations finalise les préparatifs de la délégation
qui rencontrera le pape François au Vatican en décembre 2021

(Ottawa, ON) – L’Assemblée des Premières Nations (APN) dévoile aujourd’hui les détails de sa délégation qui se rendra prochainement à la Cité du Vatican en appui à l’appel à l’action n^o 58 de la Commission de vérité et réconciliation. En collaboration avec la Conférence des évêques catholiques du Canada (CECC), l’APN a confirmé qu’il est prévu que 13 délégués se réunissent avec le Saint-Père le 20 décembre 2021. Ces derniers auront l’occasion de s’adresser au Saint-Père avant de se joindre à tous les délégués autochtones pour entendre la réponse de Sa Sainteté.

Nous avons demandé à Sa Sainteté de présenter des excuses aux survivants sur nos terres ancestrales », a déclaré Norman Yakeleya, Chef régional des T.-N.-O. et titulaire du portefeuille des gardiens du savoir, des pensionnats indiens et des anciens combattants des Premières Nations, qui dirigera la délégation. « Il est encourageant de constater que le Saint-Siège s’est engagé en ce sens au mois d’octobre. Dès maintenant, notre délégation peut entamer un dialogue quant à la forme que prendront ces excuses. Notre rencontre en décembre est la prochaine étape de la concrétisation de l’appel à l’action n° 58 de la CVR. »

Les membres de la délégation des Premières Nations, soit 13 représentants de tout le Canada, seront annoncés sous peu.

Le Chef Wilton Littlechild, porte-parole officiel de la délégation, Fred Kelly, conseiller spirituel, et Phil Fontaine, gardien du savoir, seront également présents.

Je demande à l’Église d’offrir un certain nombre de réparations aux Premières Nations et à tous les survivants », a déclaré la Chef nationale de l’APN, RoseAnne Archibald. « La délégation a pour mission d’engager Sa Sainteté dans un dialogue constructif afin de garantir ces réparations, notamment en révoquant la bulle papale de 1493 sur la doctrine de la découverte. J’attends avec impatience les résultats de cette rencontre et la détermination des prochaines étapes. »
